Many possibilities including less cost to Vz and less support needed.

Money. I.e. the most famous incident was the disabling of some of the
features of the Motorola 710, which eliminated the ability to get photos
out of the phone using Bluetooth. This meant that photos had to me sent
over the Verizon network.

To make you pay for things that you could otherwise do for free...Good for
the stockholders (short term), bad for you.
It pisses people off to be screwed over or used and eventually it comes back
to bite the screwer in the XXX. The VZW suits seem to not understand that
simple point.

It forces most people to then subscribe to various $$$$$ services
(Get-It-Now, Unlimited Pics & Msgs, etc.) if they want to utilize what
was once the intended functionality of the phone they purchased...i.e.:
being able to xfer pics, etc. between phone and pc which was the case
with the Moto V710. The phone manufacturer complies with the carriers
demands in order to get a contract for xxx,ooo phones.
Luckily there are solutions if you are adventurous and a little bit
computer savvy,

Oh, come on, sport! Why would they let you do something yourself, say
with your Bluetooth link they can SELL YOU FROM THE SYSTEM?
Isn't that what the lawsuit was all about? Well, Duhhhhh....

Compatability with the National network? I know some features work when on
the left coast that don't on the right.

That's not what I meant, Larry. Your esoteric one word response
provided no real answer to the OP's question. Why couldn't you have
responded with what you posted above?

| That's not what the lawsuit was about. The lawsuit was for not properly
disclosing the limitations, not for not providing them.

My LG VX5200 has disabled features. I discovered this only through some
really intensive digging, using 3rd-party software to explore the file
system on the phone. There are various folders where "ringtones" (midi)
files are stored on the VX5200. One of them (where the default ~15 or so
ringtones is stored) is (apparently) HIDDEN, and NOT ACCESSIBLE. There are
two other folders where ringtones can be stored. HOWEVER, if you upload
ringtones from a PC to either or both of those two folders on the phone, the
VX5200 will ignore them. That is, it doesn't mount those directories when
the phone boots. So you do not have access to any ringtones that you
transfer to the phone from a PC. (such as with a USB data cable)
Now here is the part that's REALLY outrageous . . . there are 5 ringtones
stored in one of those 'ignored' folders FROM THE FACTORY. They are nothing
special, something like train, ode to joy, dreamscapes, beethoven
something?, ???. BUT, you do not have access to those 5 ringtones through
the VX5200 menu system. So basically, they are just taking up space!!! I'm
not sure how many people would want to use any of those 5 ringtones, but the
VX5200 is programmed NOT TO LET YOU.
Now, there is a way to transfer ringtones from the PC to the VX5200, and
actually USE THEM, with the phone's own internal menu system, just like all
the default ringtones that come with the phone. But it's not intuitive, and
it involves deleting a couple of files on the phone.
Basically, it looks like someone went to great lengths to prevent ringtones
from being used in the LG VX5200, unless they happened to be delivered to
the phone via "get it now".
At least the wallpaper files are in a folder that is easily accessible with
a USB data cable. -Dave

| Send the manufacturer a note. It's quite possible that it was
overlooked during field testing. It happens.

How do you hide an entire directory, reprogram the phone to ignore other
directories, and then overlook it? I suppose it's possible, but I really
don't see how. The more obvious explanation is that LG is well aware of how
the phone is programmed, as they programmed it per Verizon's explicit
instructions. IMHO -Dave

So they could try to sell you ringers, phonebook backups, and such via Get
It Now....
If you're resourceful enough though, that doesn't stop people from putting
them on themselves and backing up phonebook, etc to a PC...

Uhhhh, or buy a $20 TF card and do it that way, which is the path that I
took for my V710 and current E815...

I was not aware of the lawsuit over the "features" issue. I've heard of
a lawsuit over a billing issue.
is the "features" lawsuit still on going or has it been resolved?

What will be interesting though is that first reports by razr owners on
hofo are that full obex is enabled on the razr out of the box from verizon,
accidental or intentional I have no idea. If this is true I want verizon to
enable my 815 the same way....

Believe it was resolved by Verizon paying those who bought the 710 $25.

If the V3C is OBEX capable out of the box and you can get your 815 OBEX
enabled, why not
allow those of us who have the VX8100 to do it. Hell, allow ALL BT capable
phones that VZW sells
to be OBEX enabled. We shouldn't have to resort to "other means" to do
this.

| I wonder why verizon is letting this phone go thru with the OBEX on ? One
could always complain and say hey, my 815 is not but the razr is. Wonder if
they would turn it on. Or for that fact any past phone that had it turned
off. "715" LG 9100 And other's.

That this is outrageous anti-consumer behavior on the point of Verizon and
possibly LG. (I thought that was obvious) -Dave

Sending the manufacturer a note won't do much good. They will just
refer you back to VZW.
