Lost Phonebook on Verizon VX4400

I bought a straight cable and then found BitPim advised that it would
not work. But I tried it anyway with BitPim, and as they predicted it
hung up half way thro downloading the phonebook. Now my phonebook
appears to be empty. Blank. No entries! But the phone still knows the
names of people who are calling and voice activated calling works. So
the directory must still exist. I can get into service code 000000.
Does anyone know how to fix this problem? Thanks.
