Author Treo 650 report - anyone?
C C

2005-06-26, 4:55 pm

Hello.

I am interested in the Treo 650. Anyone report from someone who
has this phone with VZW? Battery life, OTA Outlook sync, network
connection speed, etc???

Thanks in advance.

cnet.com, and phonescoop.com are two excellent sources of feedback. Not
better than what you will get here, but perhaps faster. I have "two" on
order myself, having previously loved the K7135

The only downside I'm aware of (for existing customers) is that if they had
previously been able to use data for just the cost of minutes, selecting a
PDA (or even replacing a PDA) will likely trigger a separate data plan
requirement. That's all well and good if you understand that going in.

-Dan

PS: for me personally, the current data prices are insane. Literally more
expensive than starting a separate voice plan. To each their own.

Dan, you are correct, however, a call to CS explaining that you have a PDA
for its PDA convenience (if you remember when PDA's didn't have phone's
built in) and you would like the per-use data that uses your minutes; and
none of this data plan. You will find that this is possible, you just need
to ask for it.

Alternatively: Two "opposite" requirements: 1) You DO NOT want a data plan,
but yet 2)You want national access because you have get-it-now capability.

Those two combinations should get you the original plan you are on. vZW
blames the automatic data plan on the way their computers are programmed;
yet fail to recognize that VZW programmed them that way. dr (who has a Treo
750 scheduled for delivery for me today, and my friend the next day)
(still skeptical of the keyboard, but the graphics and features are awesome,
but accessories are $$$)

Is this what Verizon actually told you ?
Is it possible to get this MOU plan for the Treo 650 in all areas ?

Where did you order your Treo 750 from ?
I've only seen a few pictures of it and it's not on Verizon's web site.

I believe you may be misunderstanding what the Dr. is saying. He isn't
saying you can get MOU billing on the treo in the sense of no additional
charges save minutes. He is saying you can subscribe to data as pay-per-use
at 1.5 cents per kilobyte, or $15/megabyte. Bear in mind that not using any
data under this scenario costs you nothing.

So as he said, if you simply want the PDA, and phone, without data, you can
get it without an additional monthly fee.

-Dan

PS- as a diversion on this topic:

I still find Verizon data pricing unreasonable. Note that Verizon sales
people two years ago were telling every customer about the included high
speed data option. It was "fishy" then, only because it has never been
mentioned on the website. Note that I got permission to use 1X data for the
cost of minutes (no addl fee) in writing from our Verizon rep. And, no I
don't expect this to grant me unlimited included data, but it should reverse
the charges once if I get billed for data down the road-- as it would be a
clear change from past policy on the matter.

So much of what we use on our plans is never promised in writing anywhere--
even basic things like coverage area can change over time as preferred
roaming partners are changed. It's crappy that the normal party line about
included data changed. The sales folks shouldn't promise features simply
because of the way they are currently billed. Verizon promised this two
years ago, so systematically, that I believe it was intentional. i.e. Get
them hooked on data, then later make them pay. Anyway, if you spent time in
Verizon stores two years ago, called 611,etc. literally every rep you spoke
with would promise this feature when asked. It's very clear to me that the
company policy changed to better suit their revenue needs. By the way, I do
realize data is expensive to provide, the error was virtually every sales
person promising this feature to begin with, and allowing the "error" to
exist for going on 3 years. This gives customers like me years of billing
statements showing no charge for data. And yes, I am aware at some point it
can simply change.

I think what the Dr. is talking about is the same as MOU.

He says: "the per-use data that uses your minutes".

And then he says: "Those two combinations should get you
the original plan you are on".

Otherwise, I think Verizon would be happy to charge you $15/MB
without requiring you to come up with an excuse or explain how
you're going to use your phone :-)

Apologies for typing in the dark: this is a 650 note, and I made a typo: The
Treo 650 is what I have on order. (I have no knowledge of a 750, sorry).

Also, I explained how "I" keep, and recommend to others how to keep, data
per-use on an existing/current vZW line of service; vZW does not "tell me"
how to work around their computer systems or revenue sources. To be fair:
(although vZW is under no obligation to be fair) this is because I/we/they
have had the per-use data on our line(s) already and want to keep it without
paying MORE for less from vZW. It would be un-fair to try this on a new
line of service, as they don't offer that per-use promo anymore. dr

Dan: you are right, and then some. Thanks for explaining perhaps better than
I.
a) what you said is correct. Data pay-per-use is one option
b) I implied you can "keep" your MOU feature, and not have an explicit data
plan (pay-per-use or bulk plan). Yes, for people that had it, we seem to be
able to keep it. I still have the MOU that they promised me years ago; I
just continue to have to fight to keep it whenever I change phones. dr

Very cool dr.

I suspect keeping the no addl cost MOU billing requires someone to
find a rep/dealer willing to add the 650 without a price plan.

Although my data use is only occassional, I do care about it for the
times when I use it (Mostly I'm in places with wireless or other options).

Some VZW people have claimed that some Verizon staff are looking
for Treo ESN's attached to voice-only plans. These users claim to have
received a letter requiring them to select a data plan. (I read this awhile
back in Howard Forums).

Oddly, my 7135 on my existing account with MOU serves most all of
my needs. I would have liked the high-res screen and keyboard for SSH
to avoid laptop tethering, but otherwise pleased with what I've got.

I find Rick Witt's directory assistant, for directory assistance, including
maps and driving directions to be very valuabe tool when I'm on the road.

You too! Yes, I love the directory assistant, and I just opened the Treo
650 and the screen res is outstanding. Only had it a few moments, as I
still prefer my graffiti, I've left it to charge. I'll read the manual
(yes, I do) but giving up the flip (7135) for a Treo 650 (even if for free)
is a stretch for me. If I'm going to give up the flip, maybe I just give up
on palm, and wait for the Samsung on the 7th. Decisions, decisions.

I only use the data occasionally; usually directory assistant. I have been
know to use the data when I'm on vacation but that is only once a year. So
I really use the PDA, and phone, data rarely, but if I need/want data, I
want to access it at the cost of my minutes (MOU) as they offered me, as I
insist on keeping. Easy enough. dr

I also liked the flip design of my 7135 but the flip case
for the Treo makes it feel a little like a flip phone too :-)

Maybe they can improve on the case so you can open it just
by snapping your wrist.

I haven't seen a good flip case that gives the look/feel of the 7135 clip.
VZW didn't seem to have near any good accessories. However, I found treo
central awesome, but haven't bought anything yet.
http://store.treocentral.com/ (and no, I don't have financial interest in
these folks)

PS: after charging over-night, my 650 went DOA, and a replacement is on its
way. I'm looking forward to it, just need to find the graffiti for it,
spare pens, and read the book, as I'm not comfortable with the navigation.
But the resolution is still awesome! I just need to learn how to use it.
