In-network usage possible for voicemail?

| This subject has been beaten to death before but I haven't seen any
threads on this lately...
Is there any way of accessing voicemail by using IN-network minutes?
The last time I read this newsgroup, *86 counts as peak time and so
does calling a "backdoor" number. Some people had suggested in the past
to call your own number from your cell phone rather than *86.
Billig-wise, I think it seems to have the same effect as *86.

Call from another VZW phone?

| Just out of curiosity, is it that big of a deal? Voicemail probably isn't
going to be a big concern when counting minutes. I wouldn't think so
anyway.

| How does that help? Calling *86 from a VZW phone uses up plan minutes,
not IN-Network minutes.

| You are right-- not a huge deal. But just the other day I was clearing
up a backlog of saved messages from my VZW phone during daytime and
noticed that I used up 10 mins or so just during that session. I
imagine I easily eat up 30 or more mins in a month out of my 400 min
allowance so if there is a way to use in-network mins, that would be
great!

More specifically, call your phone number from another VZW phone, and
let the call go to VM. Press # to switch to command mode and be prompted
for your VM password. A call to *ANOTHER* VZW phone that goes to VM is IN.

| Well, if you were to clear out old messages, why not do it after 9 at night
or on the weekend (if possible, that is). Wouldn't doing that not count
towards regular minutes and instead be charged as part of unlimited night
and weekend minutes?

To reach your voice mail from *ANOTHER* VZW phone, you don't dial *86,
you dial your own phone number. When your greeting starts, press #
then your PIN, and you're 'IN'.

| You could use a land line phone and dial your cell phone and get VM that
way. No minutes to worrie about, and dose not cost any thing extra.

| Yes, except I usually check VM on the go so I don't have access to a
landline or another VZW phone (as some other poster suggested). I only
get a limited amount of peak mins so every min counts, and every min
over the limit counts even more!

Really? You don't say. When did this start?

| To specifically answer your question: Yes, there is a way. But it uses
another VZW phone. So, it's still going to cost you.
Here's the scenario. You have a group plan with up to four users. Each
uses up about 20 minutes a day--about 400 minutes a month--calling
voicemail (four users=1,600 minutes). So, you add an additional phone
for $9.95 a month, set up the voicemail, and leave the phone in the
drawer.
To check your voicemail using IN minutes, call the "phone in a drawer".
At the prompt, dial #, the passcode (for the phone in the drawer), #,
then 5. You will then be asked to enter the number of the voicemail you
want to reach. Dial your number. It's all IN--but quite a bit of work
to get around using minutes.
So, one way or the other, you're going to pay to call your voicemail
during peak hours unless you use a landline. The scenario making this
worth the trouble is quite rare.
Essentially, if your time is worth very little, you can find games to
get around some of the cost and save minutes, but it's hardly worth it
for most users. If you need the minutes, add them. For twenty bucks you
can get between 450 and 650 additional minutes. Fork the cash over,
avoid the worry and get some sleep.

| I may be wrong (happens quite often :), but when you reach another VZW
customer's voicemail, doesn't that come from regular minutes rather than
"in" minutes? I KNOW that happens with 2 of my relatives on VZW when I
reach their voicemail--no "in minutes", just "peak" or "off-peak".
Therefore, would this scenario really work?

| It is quite possible that some markets don't work that way. It works
fine in the Boston and LA markets. But, as we know, everything is not
uniform.
