Author Best deal on Phone w/One Year Contract??

My contract is about up. I am dire need of a new phone. I like the Motorola
e815 and the LG VX8100. At Amazon you can get either for free after rebate
when signing up for a new account, but they only sell Two Year contractras
for Verizon.

Anyone know of any good deal for a One Year contract???

Don't go thru Amazon they are nothing but trouble. They sent me my
phone after 2 weeks late then they never sent my info to verizon there
is no Customer service and I just got a run a round from them and I
ended up getting the phone activated at a local store. Amazon has
really gone down hill.

Check the VZW website or call them. I'm surprised you're at the end of a VZW
contract and don't know what NE2 is? You must be the only person who the VZW
marketing machine has missed ;-). It stands for New Every Two and means that
they'll give you a free phone every 2 years (or up to $100 credit towards
phones over $100) if you renew another 2 year contract. So if you only want
a 1 year agreement I don't think you will qualify.

The VX8100 is being marketed now as a NE2 free phone as I've seen many of
their ads and mailings offering it to me if I renew (since I'm off contract
now). I think the e815 is like $20 or so on the NE2 deal.

Being an "NE 2" newbie, I must ask: is this $100 off IN ADDITION to the
promotional (2-yr contract) price of the phone?

I do a bit about the new phone every 2 year, but that is contingent on a 2
YEAR CONTRACT which I don't want to do. I am interested in 1 year, not two.

Yes. That is why they have a "2" in the name...
1 year you get the 1 year promotional price. You
will not get the 2 year promotional price or the additional
$100 off of that for New Every *2*.

You can probably do it with a 1 year contract renewal, but it'll most likely
make the new phone cost about $50-$100 more than if you did a 2 year
contract. So if having a 1 year contract is worth that much money to you
then go for it..

Personally, I've been with Verizon since I started with my first Motorola
bagphone in the mid 90's, and I see no reason to switch to another provider
so a 2 year contract is no problem for me, especially if it'll let me get a
new phone for little to no additional cost.:-)

People's reasoning behind refusing a 2 year contract while
accepting a 1 year contract is most often pretty flawed.
The early termination fee is $175. If you need/want a new
phone you pick up the $100 NE2 and the promo difference
between 1 and 2 years ($35?). So you've already recouped
all but maybe $50 of the ETF. IF YOU TERMINATE. There
is some probility that you might terminate within the first
year. You have reduced the risk there. If you don't terminate
within the first year the probability that you would terminate
in the second year is greatly reduced (far less than terminating
withing the first year). If it didn't happen during the first year
it is more probable that it won't happen in the second year.
Then there is the value of the 2 years you are putting in to
qualify for the next NE2. There is some value in that.

If you are *sure* you are going to terminate after 1 year and
before 2 years then you should do the 1 year extension.
Otherwise it's pretty much a no-brainer to do the 2 year
extension.
