Sprint. Not Verizon.

I wouldn't get too excited about it. From my quick glance at the
Sprint plan that offers free incoming minutes from any network, it does
not have free mobile to mobile calling, like their "fair and flexible"
plan does. So while incoming calls are free, all outgoing calls burn
up your minutes, it seems.

So? Unlimited Mobile to Mobile calls to other Sprint and Nextel users is
only $5/month. IMHO not a bad deal. Saved us a ton when we were on Sprint
and my mother-in-law was also on Sprint; my wife talks to her mother 300-500
minutes per month.

Just curious. From the wording of your post it sounds that you no
longer use Sprint. I know you changed from Verizon and Sprint when you
moved to California. Are you still with Sprint or have you changed?

It was very fortunate for you that both your wife and her mother were
both in an area where Sprint actually worked. We had Sprint at one
time and for us, the coverage was horrible. In downtown Washington,
D.C., standing on the street next to a Metro stop, we could not get a
signal. In the Silver Spring area (Maryland), the coverage was
pitiful.

Why are you no longer with Sprint?

Here's the timeline:

September 2000: signed with Verizon for my phone.
December 2001 (I think): got an old Sprint phone and activated it as a gift
for my then-girlfriend.
June 2002: married my girlfriend. ;)
June 2003: moved out here.
June 2004: after having been fed up with Verizon for over six months, fired
them when my contract ended. Went with Sprint for the PCS-PCS airtime for
calls to wife and family, and because I already had an open account with
Sprint anyhow.

At this point, Sprint's CS was still pretty good. It was pretty rotten back
in early '02 or so, but they made huge improvements and actually got really
good. Then they outsourced CS and the quality of service tanked -- not the
quality of calls, mind you, Sprint's still the best choice in my little
corner of Apple Valley -- the quality of *customer service.* The outsourced
CS employees seem to be a bunch of assholes, to put it bluntly. (Most of
them. I'm sure there are some good ones in the bunch.)

August 2005: I think my mother-in-law must have gotten fed up with Sprint
too, because she flipped to T-Mobile, and since the wife uses several
HUNDRED mobile-to-mobile minutes calling Mom every month, it made financial
sense to do so even though it cost $150 to terminate my contract. (The
wife's phone went out of contract a couple years ago.)

Sprint's signal is stronger than T-Mobile's or Verizon's in this area. They
have two towers, one in an emptyish corner of AV two minutes from my house.
But T-Mobile is still mostly good, and I can roam anywhere (domestically)
for free, same as on the old National Single-Rate plan with Verizon, AND my
phone can use either T-Mobile's network OR Cingular's network in this area.
I can actually choose which network to use, right from the phone.

And T-Mobile's customer service has been pretty stellar. I've thrown a lot
of tough questions at them and they've done a good job of answering them.
And they actually seem to care whether or not I remain a customer.

I'm satisfied (so far). I hope I don't have to flip again, because the only
remaining choice is SBC (Cingular), and I refuse to give SBC any more of my
money. (Long story; if you're really interested email me and I'll explain)

I didn't know that. Somehow I got the impression that
T-Mobile pretty much sold service over other's networks
and didn't have much if any of thier own.

Heh, if you're interested ask me for mine right here.

I can definitely vouch for this. When I was with T-Mo they always took
care of me, even if it involved escalating to their engineers and
getting back a few days later.

Problem was, we couldn't reach the kids when they were visiting friends
on the other side of town (which the kids didn't necessarily consider a
bad thing). We ended up switching to Verizon even though they cost more
because (1) they have the best network; (2) they have the best network;
and (3) they have the best network. Unfortunately their customer
service is mediocre. The reps seem like they want to help but just
don't know how, and I get the feeling that they are actively discouraged
from escalating calls to those more knowledgable.

I wish it was possible to get good customer service AND a consistently
good signal. But maybe that violates FCC rules or something.

Actually, in the New york area, it was Cingular that used T Mobile's
network before the acquisition of ATT.

If the signal is good all over, and the phone works great, and there
are no billing problems, who needs customer service? So far, that's
been my experience with Verizon.

Absolutely not true. Most of T-Mobile is the old VoiceStream Wireless
network, which Deutsche Telekom bought a number of years ago. Prior to that,
VoiceStream had acquired two smallish regional GSM providers, Aerial and
Omnipoint. I think Powertel ended up being part of T-Mo too.

Up until the Cingular-AT&T merger, Cingular used T-Mobile's network in NYC,
and T-Mobile used Cingular's network in California. If I understand
correctly, Cingular is divesting some of its network to T-Mobile now that
they own the old AT&T Blue network.

Well, I'm happy with T-Mo's coverage, but being a technically-oriented user,
I've had plenty of questions about calling features, text messaging, and
other stuff. And my original Motorola V188 dropped a ton of calls. I
actually had someone at a T-Mo corporate store set up a warranty return for
me, but it could as easily have been CS - but I needed to talk to one or the
other. :) (The replacement V188 is not dropping calls, btw.)

cingular sold the network infrastructure to T-Mobile in California and
Nevada for several million dollars. The agreement states that
cingular by paying a fee will have access to their legacy network for
a period of up to three years while they transition subscribers to the
old AT&T Wireless infrastructure (so called "blue" network.)
Eventually all west coast cingular which used their old network will
be transitioned to the "blue" network. In NYC the network sharing
agreement will also end and those subscribers will also be transferred
to the "blue" network there also.
