Replacing V60 Question (GPS/e911 related)
|
|
|
| I have a V60 that is specifically designed to work in my car.--no other
phone has the plug compatibility so I'm stuck with that phone.
My V60 is currently on an active Verizon Family Share plan. Now if it dies,
can I replace it with another V60? Since I would not be introducing a new
phone that is not GPS/e911 enabled, I hope my V60 might be "grandfathered".
Am Icorrect?

I can't imagine what kind of plug you could be talking about, I have a
V60 and there is nothing plug specific I am aware of, later Moto phones
use the same accessories, but last time I was checking, not long ago,
they still offered the V60S which is GPS enabled.

| Thanks for the information, Charles. It's a BMW phone and plugs into a
cradle in the car. I'll check on the V60s for plug compatibility.

Probably not.

The V710 phone from Motorola uses the same accessories. Same with the
V260/262/265 series of phones.

If you can find a V60. Supposedly you might be able to find one at a
VZW store that they have behind the counter or in the back room, or at
your local Radio Shack. But for the most part its been discontinued.
I still like my phone (a V60s I bought in 2004). I had to buy a new
battery for it about 2 weeks ago (online from Verizon) and works like
a champ.
I still have my car charger and FM radio accessories from my V120c and
V120e phones and they work fine with my friend's V265 as well as my
current V60s.

The V60s is thicker. Don't know if that would cause a problem fitting
in the same cradle. Seems like a bad idea for BMW to to design a cradle
specific to one kind of phone.

If that's the case, then wouldn't the e815 use the same accessories,
seeing as it uses virtually the same physical design as the V710?

Even so, it's doubtful they'll activate it, even if the OP had a v60
prior. The eGPS carriers still have taht 5% goal to reach.

Of course you're 'introducing a new phone without GPS capabilities', even if
you replace an existing one with another one. There is no 'grandfathering'
involved here.

Not necessarily. My wife's V220 on Cingular doesn't use any of the
accessories for my other V series phones.

The V60s is a GPS enabled phone.

| The answer (sadly) is no. You sound like you have a upscale car (BMW,
Mercedes, Cadillac, etc) with an integrated (custom loaded cell phone,
firmware from the car manufacturer). Usually that means a mated pair: car
mfg, car cradle, and special software in a std phone. Usually they are V60
phones, and they are not upgradeable. (Before the v60, they were star tacs)
That means your cradle has specific limitations and it "not upgradeable" If
you have a v60, then you can't use the v60s. If your current phone is non
agps, then sadly, if it breaks, you are $%^&*, And I don't think those car
kits are upgradeable (not the Mercedes or bmw's last time I looked).
I wish I had better news for you: take good care of that non aGps phone, and
its matching cradle. Awesome when it works, and impossible to replace (or
at least not easily). You need the special combined firmware (special load)
in the phone to make it work "integrated". If it isn't aGps, you probably
won't get it activated on a new/existing vzw line. But if you do, you will
be the exception. dr
