Verizon wireless - delayed voice messages

Has anyone experienced delayed messages to your mailbox, when on the road.
I am not talking about hours, but days of delay. While traveling you may
roam, get on extended network, analog or digital, but when you get back into
verizon network, you would think you could get your voice mail promptly by
calling in and checking. Not the case as we recently experienced on a trip
to the northeast.
