It appears Verizon has coverage in Alaska around the major cities. Can my
friend in Lower 48 where a Verizon plan is offered purchase a phone & send
it for my use from Alaska?

Sure, as long as your friend pays the bill each month and VZW doesn't take
note that none of the calls originate in the plan's home area while 100% of
them originate in Alaska. Also, tell your friend to make sure that VZW
installs low viscosity/winter weight oil in your new phone or you won't be
able to start it up in the mornings.

Why not do it the easy way and sign up yourself?

I don't think anyone in AK can. According to verizon's web site, they
do not have any coverage in AK, only roaming.

VZW does not have coverage in Alaska. They have roaming agreements
with other various Alaskan carriers that do have coverage in Alaska.
Having just returned from Alaska the day before yesterday, I can,
however, tell you that my Verizon Wireless Blackberry 7250 roamed
seamlessly on ACS while in the Anchorage and MatSu Valley areas, but
data did not work (no data roaming agreements, yet).

Yes you can do that no problem. I have Verizon service but use it in
an extended network area 365 days a year. They have extended network
coverage in Alaska and it is pretty decent...I have used it personally.
I don't know what that Zelinske guy is talking about.

Extended network means you are using someone else's towers...but that
Verizon has a contract with that company to allow their customers to
use them. You can send and receive calls just fine....however data
services typically do not work in extended areas.

I used my V276 in Petersburg, Alaska but it was on their "extended network"
an only available as an analog service, but it still worked just fine.

I am saying the same thing you are saying. Verizon does not have any
service in Alaska. Alaskans can not sign up for verizon service. A
verizon subscriber, someone who lives where verizon does have service,
can roam in Alaska on verizon's roaming partners, otherwise known as
extended network. But it is roaming. Verizon does not have a network
in AK.

I am not disputing that current verizon plans do not charge for roaming
on "extended network" roaming partners. verizon does not have a network
in AK, just roaming partners for their "extended network".

you are 100% right Jerome.............apologies if it sounded like I was
disputing what you said. Wonder if all their partners in AK are all going
digital when the deadline hits?

Well, as some analog lovers are bound to point out, it is not really a
deadline, but just the end date of mandatory maintaining of analog
networks. And that carriers are not required to shut analog networks
down at that time, but have the right to maintain them. However, IMHO,
few carriers will keep analog running much past their requirement.
Some/all of those carriers will likely overlay digital before that date.

My son, who lives in California, uses his Verizon phone in Anchorage
when he visits. The data functions (photo sending, etc.) do not work.
Even thought Verizon told him that Anchorage was within his plan due to
network agreements, he was still billed for roaming charges. I
personally wish that Verizon would move into Alaska and give some
competition to the other cutthroats.

Market entrance costs preclude that at the present time. Future ??
