Can anyone recommend a good dealer or ebay seller for the LG VX5200
USB cable? Verizon apparently no longer sells it, and I found out the
hard way with my old Nokia that not all non-OEM cables are created
equal...

Thanks!

ebay mobilesandpdas

he sells just the usb cable, but sends you links to download drivers for the
lg vx5200 and bitpim software. both the drivers and bitpim software work
fine. however, the vx5200 firmware is deliberately programmed to ignore
ringtones that are NOT added to the phone by "Get It Now".

There is a workaround, but I am NOT RESPONSIBLE for ANYBODY damaging their
phone by doing this!!!!

Going by memory on this first part, but there is a folder under /dload where
ringtones should be added. I believe it is /dload/ringtones , but the name
will be obvious, and it is directly under /dload directory. Use bitpim to
browse the filesystem and while in that ringtone folder (/dload/ringtones?),
RIGHT-click the folder contents area on the right and add any ringtone you
want to the folder. (repeat as necessary)

When you are done adding ringtones one at a time, go back and click on the
dload directory (/dload) so that you see the files stored on that directory.
Right-click and DELETE the file named either "ringtone.dat" or
"ringtones.dat".

Now disconnect the phone from the data cable, turn the phone off for about
30 seconds and then turn it back on again. Doing this will force the phone
to rebuild the .dat file and all ringtones (including the ones you added)
should be visible.

By the way, ignore the ringtones tab of bitpim, as it is useless for the
vx5200. The only way to add ringtones or wallpaper is by exploring the
filesystem of the phone itself. (which you can do with bitpim)

On a side note, if you click around various directories on the phone, you
will find five ringtones (ode to joy, train, dreamsequence, rainforest,
beethoven's 5th) stored on the phone by the factory that are NOT AVAILABLE
through the VX5200 menu system. So they are just taking up space. (!) I'm
not sure if you can just delete ringtones.dat to get to them. I had to
experiment a bit to figure out how to get the phone to recognize new
ringtones. During that process, I moved the 5 ringtones out to the PC
desktop and then back to the same directory on the phone where I was storing
other ringtones. I now have all the default ringtones (that are on the
phone when you buy it from Verizon), the 5 hidden ones, and 5 others that I
added myself. -Dave

Interesting, I had almost the opposite experience. Loaded ringtones and
wallpaper to the phone using bitpim. They were available from the phone
menu system without deleting the .dat file. Did find and add the other
5 tones though.

Was a new phone received just this month. Maybe they (vzw) have changed
their tune?

Actually, somebody emailed me to say that there was a modified version of
bitpim that supported the VX5200 better. The link didn't work, though, so I
never tried it. Maybe bitpim supports this phone better, now. -Dave

Could be, used 0.8.05 downloaded recently from their web site.

That's it. BitPim Version History says:

Changes in 0.8.05

* Fixed bug that prevented writing wallpaper and ringtones to the LG VX5200
# Fixed bug that prevented writing memos to the LG VX5200
