How is coverage in the Hanover, NH area? We'll be visiting there in a
couple of weeks, and we need coverage, as my wife will be on call.

I travel through Hanover and West Lebanon frequently and have experienced
very good coverage. Make sure the PRL in her phone is up to date though.
Used to use US Cellular for coverage, but most is native VZW now.

I visit there often. Verizon coverage is excellent; even in the
mountains.

While updating your PRL is a good idea it will only affect your
phone's roaming ability. PRLs have nothing to to with native
coverage.

Check this very reliable website for NH coverage. It seems that
Hanover is Verizon's 1900mhz service as of last august.

Unless the new native coverage has a new SID that isn't in her old PRL, so
the phone doesn't know to use the native signal instead of the roaming.

I'll stand by what I said. PRL ONLY affects roaming.

Coverage is excellent inthe Hanover/West Lebanon area abut there are
otehr parts of the Upper Valley where you will find no coverage at all,
not jsut Verizon but NONE. Varies by area. For example, when you go
across the bridge from hanover to Norwich, VT you will find coverage
start to dade and get spotty, when you head North you will find the
same along some routes.

I don't doubt it, but keep in mind that we're talking about a very
rural part of the country. I'm really surprised that coverage is as
good as it is.

Thanks for all the input - it looks like my wife can safely field her
calls while we're up there.

Aw shucks.. You would've had a ball watching her run around the track,
looking for "3 bars"..

Seriously, good luck, and "great signal"....

being from New England, "very rural" is relative. Theirs no secret to the
fact why VZW is "king" around here.

Then you stand incorrect. It not only affects roaming, it also affects NOT
roaming. Specifically, it affects WHEN to roam and when NOT to roam.

The PRL is a list of SIDs. It has both VZW and other companies' SIDs, and
they are ranked in the order the phone should try to use them. The VZW SIDs
are ranked first, then others according to various complicated formulae and
agreements VZW has with those other companies. But the VZW SIDs have to be
in there for the phone to know to use them instead of another one, and if
VZW adds a new SID, they have to issue a new PRL or phones in the area it
covers will still roam.

Well then I stand corrected. Thanks

I guess Bob the Printer knew all this but was afraid to add anything
intelligent to the conversation.

Verizon has a nice coverage locator tool on the home page.

plug in your address and it will show you the coverage.

Earlier today I was using that locator tool to determine the coverage
around Newfoundlake in NH for some computer-less friends. The Verizon
coverage there is a bit spotty, but the roaming agreements make the
entire area look pretty solid, mostly 'extended digital'. In fact, the
entire state of NH looks pretty good, coverage-wise, except for what
appears to be unpopulated areas.

No doubt, NH coverage has improved in the last 12 months.
I notice the difference up + down RT 16.
