Author small smartphone for streaming audio online??

Does Verizon want my business? I've been doing my homework can't find
what I want.

I want a compact windows smartphone. I am currently happy with my GSM
audiovox smt-5600, but I'd prefer to switch to verizon since I'm
having coverage problems at 2 locations where I need the phone most,
and most of my frequent contacts are on verizon.

I'm open to a non-windows phone but the OS must support audio players
that will play most streaming audio formats. (tcpmp, windows media
player, real player, or equivalent) Palm may be the only current
candidate. Linux? Symbian? Maybe someday?

I don't want a QWERTY keyboard, but I do want numeric keys with T9.
T9 works great for the limited amount of typing I do. I'm not keen on
using a stylus. A big screen isn't that important either, 176 x 220
is enough. EV-DO would be nice, and I would pay for it, but i really
only need about 30 k/sec to meet my needs. I want SD, mini-SD or
micro SD storage mostly for mp3s.

For now i seem to have 2 choices, buy a phone that is TOO BIG and
probably too fragile, or buy an evdo phone, like samsung sch-a950,
motorola e815, or lg vx-8100 and learn how to hack it to connect by
bluetooth to a pocket pc or laptop so i can listen to world news while
commuting. Hacking seem files does not appeal to me. Why won't
verizon sell me a smartphone that I can carry in my pocket without
risking castration, or breaking the phone?

I will probably stay with my current carrier and phone, but am
considering:
moto q, (still a mystery)
xv6700 (fragile?)
xv6660 (is a price drop coming?)
treo 700w (overpriced?) or 650 (no evdo)
samsung i730 (keyboard illegible and weak battery life?)

all respectable devices, but i don't want to carry something that big
in my pocket for two years.

The blackberry 7130e is a better form factor, but i don't think it
will play the streaming audio formats that i want to listen to. It
seems to be a messaging and email device.

The samsung i600 looked good on paper. Add an EV-DO upgrade and it
would be a very useful phone. For some reason Verizon dropped it and
also the i700 (Add number keys). Power to the pocket PC's, but why
not sell a compact smartphone too?

Must I wait and pay a high price for a LARGE QWERTY device that
probably wont make me happy? I want a phone first and a device that
can stream windows media player and TCPMP second.

thanks for feedback

contact me

if you want the i600 it is a business class handset so the websites and
retails tend not offer it.

it sounds like your solution if you want to stay small.

the treo 700 will be out mid jan, 2006.

I"m not sure if i can post my email so i'll see if you reply.

and figure that out.. if you do.

I am an agent for cingular, tmobile, sprint and Verizon.. I love
verizon.. they really are the best network for speed and reliablity.
tmobile doesn't have a pda yet that will come out this quarter.. if you
are looking for "cheap"

sprint and cingular are having some major issues.. at some basic levels
which is hurting them.

thanks eatoranges but i'm leaning against buying a new verizon phone
that doesnt have ev-do capability. the i600 also lacks bluetooth , If
functions like file transfer and dun on the the usb cables are fully
enabled, that wouldnt be a huge problem, but will i be sorry when i
discover that verizon has disabled critical functions?

i'm still looking. my biggest unanswered question is regarding the
specs on the MotoQ and differences between the 2005 pocket pc and
smartphone os. ie will there be big differences in software
availability for smartphone versions? i still dont like the large
form factor of the pocket pc.

the browser on the treo 650 i looked seemed flawed, but the 700w may
be the best future option. xv6700 is still in the running and i
suppose i should look again at the samsung i730, though i find the
keyboard text lacking enough contrast to make it legible.

maybe it's a tdma shortcoming, but i think verizon could do a lot
better with their phone selection, and the fact that they disable the
essential functions of bluetooth on most of their phones is BAD
BUSINESS. Regardless of whether they disclose this or not, their
customers should be outraged.

i feel bad for the people trying to sell verizon services. i'd hate
to have to explain policies like theirs, even if they do have a
reliable network.
