e815 as modem: connection speed?
|
|
|
| I got the e815 working as a modem via Bluetooth. But what is the correct
connection speed to set the connection profile on my computer to? 115K?
230K? more?

Set your computer to the fastest speed it is able to talk to the phone.
You might also want to consider hardware flow control if Windows gives
that option.

As high as it will go.
Also: you're just plain not going to get the full speed that EVDO is
capable of via Bluetooth (I've seen this for myself and have actually
tested the speeds). If you can, go on EBay and order a USB cable for
the e815 and connect it that way. You'll find that the gain in speed is
worth it.

| Thx. You've hit upon my concern with your remark about hardware flow
control (a phrase I've seen for years without comprehending). I was
concerned that the PC's xmission rate would outrun the phone receiving rate.
I take it from your response that the way to avoid that specifically is turn
on hardware flow control?

| Thx. I used the cable with my old LG VX4400, but that phone was itself so
slow that when I Bluetoothed the e815 & saw how fast THAT was working, I was
in heaven and didn't even consider a USB cable.
BTW, another respondent suggested turning on hardware flow control in the
Windows configuration. Would that also be a good idea for the cable setup
we're discussing?

In my experience as a desktop support professional, when hardware has the
ability to handle a task vs software, go with hardware. It tends to be
faster, more reliable, and stable. Thus, with hardware flow, software
doesn't have to get in the way.
Hope that helps.

I didn't have a problem with it when I tried it, and thus never bothered
to tweak flow control settings. But if you see there being a problem,
it wouldn't hurt to enable it.

How did you get it to work?
I just turned in a V710 for an e815. I used the V710 as a bluetooth
modem all the time, but I can't get the e815 to work at all. The
laptop pairs up with the phone, but that's it, no modem. It just says
"modem not found".
I am considering a hack or getting rid of Verizon.

I scanned through that forum but I have to find a cable first.
Was it very hard to do?
I'm not totally tech-tarded but I'm not exactly a programmer either...

Actually, I wouldn't really consider it a hack. Once you find the E815 hack
instructions on hofo, just go to step 7. If you're afraid of hacking but
want to use bluetooth for dial up, you can skip steps 5, 6, and 8.
The really hard part of all that will be finding PST. I think I found it by
doing the suggested search on beaucoup.com, and it was on the second page
of results.
