Author EVDO PCCards - which is better?

I just bought a PC5740 card from Verizon. Sure, it's got a $50.00 rebate,
etc, but it doesn't work that great at home because connectivity is somewhat
limited due to the lack of towers in my area (due to my fabulous f'ing
township and their legacy-thinking crap). However, both my Verizon E815 and
new Razr for my wife works fine (the E815 is actually better), so I know I
can get a signal depending on the phone or aircard. Previous phones, like
most of the LG's didn't work that great, if at all, at home. Sometimes had
to walk outside for a signal or sit near a window.

After reading up different aircards at various sites, it seems the Kyocera
KPC650 aircard is the better one with dualband features and an advanced
antenna MIMO system. Here's the main site I read on this:
http://evdo-coverage.blogspot.com/2...-5740-mimo.html

I am wondering what everyone's thought on this is and what you think is the
better card for connectivity. I'm leaning on the Kyocera.

Thanks,
Ace

I apologize if this was the wrong group to post this in. I looked for a
broadband wireless or EVDO group, but none that I found and thought this was
more appropriate.

I tried to buy a KPC650 but the Verizon warehouse is completely out of them.
Kind of hard to believe that.Makes me think a new one is coming out to
replace it, but not sure.

Anyone know if there's a new model coming out?

Don't think there's a new model...the 650 is that popular because it
works! I regularly pull down 700kbps. That's as fast asI need.

Cool, I'm sold! Just found this review a few moments ago says it's the best
too.

But what sux is the stores in my area and the warehouse are out. I'm
returning the pc5470 tomorrow and order the 650 online and see if they have
them. Hopefully a different warehouse or something.

Thanks!

Or: If you don't have to squeeze every kilobyte and/or don't want
to go with a 2-year contract to get the best price on a new card, do
what I did - snag a PC5220 on eBay for cheap and pay only to activate
it.

I had the PC 5220 and switch to the KPC 650 and found slightly better
results with the Kyocera, in keeping with the stuff I've seen on the net.

Get the KPC650. We have two of them purchased on ebay. I started EVDO
service with the Sierra PC5220 - do *not* spend money on a PC5220, they are
"first generation" and not nearly as good with reception/throughput as the
KPC650.

Hmm, I'll keep that in mind. But is this card actually better at reception?
My home is in a borderline fringe area. Does that card have an external
antenna slot?

Thanks Paul, and everyone else for the info.

Looks like I'm sticking with a KPC650... :-)

The 5220 isn't better than the Kyocera KCP650....
The 650 is the current winner there.

BUT, if you were to buy my surplus 5220, then yes
there is an external antenna port AND I'd throw in a
'pigtail' (antenna adapter) in the deal. Attached to a gain
antenna, it might just do the trick... certainly with an amp...

The nice thing about the 5220 is that it is compatible with the Ricoh
cardbus controllers, because it is "first generation"...

the 650 is better overall, but the ricoh cardbus controllers have a power
issue that doesnt affect the 5220 or the 580.

its an intermittent not officially confirmed issue

i would check your pcmia controller before getting the 650, novatel 620 or
the lowly 5740...

Where can I read up on this? I've got a laptop with Ricoh
controllers that's having trouble with the 5220...

Sorry Richard, just bought a 650. I thought it wise to get the better one
since I won't always be able to hook up an antenna when needed, like during
meetings, etc. Thanks anyway.

:-)

Thanks. If it helps anyone, I had the 5740 in a Compaq N610, Dell Inspiron
6000 and a Dell 700M and worked fine in all of them.

I thought it was sort of the other way around, the 5220's prior to Rev "P8A"
wouldn't work with some Dell laptops (and I assume others) because they had
power issues with the cardbus slot (like not enough juice). If you got a
late model "P8A" 5220 card, then it would work ok. See:

Both an old 5220 and a P8A worked fine...
