Author Question on porting GSM number t-mob -> VZW

If I port my GSM number to VZW, can I use the sim chip in my old GSM
phone and roam on the VZW network abroad? I know there may be cheaper
options like getting a local phone and local sim chip, but I want to
keep the SAME number. So, I would move the number to VZW, get new Treo
on their system, keep sim chip for travel? Or would that not work? I
see that VZW does offer gsm/cdma phones that seem to support the chip.

TIA,

No, you can't. The SIM isn't tied to your phone number per se, but
rather to the carrier and the account information you have with that
carrier. In other words, the SIM chip would tell the network you're
roaming on to bill your charges to your T-mobile account, which would be
closed if you switched to Verizon. Most likely, the SIM wouldn't
authenticate because of that closed account, the result being you
wouldn't be able to make any calls.

The same were true if you switched to, say, Cingular. If you tried to
use your old T-Mobile SIM, it shouldn't work.

Yes they do. You can contact Verizon's Customer serivice and ask to
speak to someone in International roaming. They can issue a SIM chip
for your account. You can then use it in any unlocked quad band GSM
phone to make calls abroad.

Also keep in mind that some countries do offer CDMA roaming with CDMA
handsets (primarily some Asian and Latin American countries, but no EU
countries as of yet). Verizon should be able to tell you if this is the
case.
