If you're referring to the new AC 700 family plan for 2 phones for $69.99 +
tax I was just offered the plan here in Florida.

We were fortunate to grab the AC 500 plan for $59.99 just before it
expired in July '05. The four of us only use about half of the 500
minutes per month, so an extra $10 for another 200 minutes, while still
a bargain, would be a waste of money for us. I suppose if VZW came out
with a new plan, it would be something like $69.99 for 1000 minutes as
a minimum plan.

Now if they would come up with something like a family plan with
unlimited calling for $99.99, I'd jump on that and cancel my landline.

Wow...expensive! Alltel just started a promo here...1000 minutes, all the
toys, Unlimited N/W, free LD, $39.95....

It only covers two states, that way, like Verizon used to have for those
that need minutes, not nationwide coverage. The difference is 100 minutes
of nationwide coverage when you need to travel is $10/block of 100 from the
611 operator. Extra phones are $10/month to share minutes.

Verizon is pricing like Nextel these days....how stupid.

Wow, thanks Larry! What, just wanted to announce for
the umteenth time that you have Altell? Nobody will
talk to you on the Altell groups? Does Altell keep their
pricing secret? Only available through referal? I'm sure
everyone too stupid to check other service provider's
plans and prices will find this extremely helpful.

same thing for us, lena. we waited a tad too long to sign up.
there's just the two of us and we don't come close to using 10% of the
500 minutes per month unless we're on the road, much less the 700
minutes we have now. oh well.

Your sure about that, Larry?

http://www.alltel.com/personal/wire...re_minutes.html

"Now your loved ones can join in on your Alltel Freedom Plan for just
$9.99 per line, per month. We’ll add up to 4 lines, so you can share
your minutes. Offer valid on any Freedom plan that’s $59.99 per month
or higher*."

"*Share your minutes on plans less than $59.99 per month for $20 per
line, per month."

I didn't find any Greater Freedmon plan that was as you suggested, but
since you say it's a promotion, I have to go to Alltel Monday to deal
with an issue regarding my KX440. Should I print your post out and
take it along?

I didn't look at the webpage, which normally doesn't show the sweet plans
from any company they publish in the local newspapers. This was a half-
page ad in the local newspaper. There's stiff competition in Charleston,
SC. Stop by and ask 'em for a deal.

Waitaminit. You're already an Alltel traitor! It doesn't apply to you!

It's better in Charleston, SC. Alltel bought out 360 Communications (who
bought out other B-system companies.) They have smoother coverage than
Verizon in Eastern SC, especially north of Charleston towards Myrtle
Beach where the only coverage Verizon has is a little PCS license they
bought up to have some coverage in Myrtle Beach, where they used to have
none. The situation is very similar to what I used to find in S Fl south
of where you live. Isn't VZW a little PCS carrier in Ft Myers and Alltel
one of the 800 Mhz analog/DCMA cellular carriers? Anyplace that is true,
Alltel will have better coverage because 800 Mhz works better than PCS,
no matter who's name is on the door. It's certainly true in Myrtle
Beach. Alltel also works better south of Charleston because they
inherited the whole coast, not just Charleston. Verizon had no coverage,
at all, not even roaming, before they bought up the A-cellular carrier
south of the Charleston County line to past Savannah in recent years. I
think the little mom and pop shop on A was South Carolina Telephone, or
something like that. When I was a VZW customer, that system wouldn't
allow a VZW customer to roam, so VZW bought them up to gain coverage to
Savannah and over to GA past Walterboro, including I-95. I left for
Alltel so don't know how good VZW's coverage is in the southern tip of SC
on VZW now. It needed lots of new towers. Every time I look at a VZW
"coverage map", the blank areas between I-95/Walterboro and GA keep
moving around, appearing then disappearing oddly. If anyone has a string
of old maps they can watch it happen.

What systems does VZW use, now, in SW FL as you travel across the area?
Is it native, now, or roaming off the PCS carrier south of Tampa? I used
to live off Gandy Blvd in St Pete and work for Sperry Microwave down
there.

Rich, how much nationwide service and how often do you travel? You might
be better off on a much cheaper carrier that offers more local coverage
like my 2-state Alltel plan that VZW dropped trying to get more revenue if
you don't travel all the time. I'm paying $39 for 800 mins, unlimited N/W,
free LD and the usual toys covering SC/NC and into the border states. I
only pay for travel coverage when I infrequently travel outside the two-
state area. Alltel charges me $10 for 100 minutes nationwide that doesn't
expire timewise and only meters if I'm roaming outside SC/NC. When it's
nearly run out, it sends me a text message asking me if I want to buy
another block of 100 more minutes. Sure is cheaper than buying nationwide
coverage you don't often need or use!

hey, larry. we travel in our motorhome roughly 6 months a year in two
3-month chunks and we never know where we're going until we go. we
pick a direction, not a destination. we picked vzw primarily because
i received a pretty good discount on the equipment and plans as i
signed up with my employer's vzw rep before i retired last august.

we're in suburban chicago and had looked at the other nationwide
carriers before choosing vzw. we had been cingular customers for 20+
years but when we wanted a new plan without having to change phones
the sales rep told us that if we didn't like it ('it' being the plan
they were pushing which included two very expensive phones) then we
could go somewhere else. so we did. without the discount it was a
toss up between sprint and vzw but we chose vzw for the discount and
backdoor internet access. if i had it to do over again i would have
signed up for 2 individual plans, 1 on sprint and 1 on vzw.

thanks for the suggestion.

Not quite as good as VZW in the upstate of SC, but acceptable. Plus,
I don't have to pay $20/mo extra for PTT service I'll never use just
to have a KX440 phone.

From what I've seen it's all their network here in SW Florida. The only time
it switched to analog was in North Carolina along rt 95. Does Alltel have an
agreement to use Verizon's network in the NY/NJ areas?
