| So, is this a worthy phone. I keep seeing mixed reviews. I have a need for a
phone at least as good as my V710, with a contacts database in it. Or should
I spend the extra for either a Blackberry or Treo.
Suggestions or comments.......?

What's your use for it? Like the others you mentioned, it's not a useful
computer for browsing the internet all hobbled up with its tiny screen and
near untypeable keyboard. No cellphone toy makes a good camera, so that's
out.
As a PDA, considering all the cell carriers do to prevent you're using it
without paying carriers to do something over-the-air you can do with a non-
cellphone PDA via IRda or cable to your computer, you're still better off
with a PDA without the cellular greed tinkering to hobble it.
Like I say....What's your use for it......that's worth all that load on its
battery, bleeding off the hours between charges. For any use, they're all
big compromises.

This is key.

I used one last week. The screen is a bit better than my PPC2002. I
frequently use my cell or PDA for maps and searches. It works fine for
searches, less than desirable for maps. My Razr V3 displays enough detail
that I can find a place if I am in a familiar area. PDAs are better but
rural areas are issues because of all the green space. To overcome that I
use a Bluetooth external display of 640x240.
>No cellphone toy makes a good camera, so that's out.
Two municipal judges have ruled the pictures taken by a cell phone are
admissible as evidence >in specified instances<. There is also the factor of
ubiquitous. I took three pictures of a woman shoplifting over three days. I
don't think she would have stood still for the camera.

Bluetooth connectivity is hobbled by one carrier. A source tells me there is
a software mod in progress. If you look at the Moto web, the Q was
originally made for GSM networks. There is a rumor Verizon had a 90 days
non-compete agreement.

I agree. I average about three connections per day out of a list of ~35
URL's. I have clients that claim good connections for email etc. while
traveling 80mph (with someone else driving).
The V3 is hobbled so I can't use a new Bluetooth GPS. That will be a primary
use of the new Q, if enabled. I've stated before, the conditions that I
design apps for on cellular devices: private, personal and public data.

That's one of my contentions for not owning one. You REALLY don't need
email at 80. With so many wifi hotspots, intentional and not, available
all over the city, I can't imagine not finding some place my wifi can get
email and look for that house at 102 Maple Street on Google Earth. NONE
of us need to be screwing around with a display you need a magnifying
glass to see...WHILE DRIVING A CAR! I've watched them doing it, and I
think this will FINALLY be the excuse used to ban cellphones in cars.
How stupid....and unnecessary.

I'm far more interested in a non-cellular PDA that has a wifi transceiver
in it I can use without the notebook computer on the hotspots:

and.....NONE OF THESE COMPANIES has a pecuinary interest in DISABLING any
Bluetooth or Wifi feature the device is capable of.....and the hotspot
company can't disable it, either.
Cellular is screwing itself with greed.....

If I took control of your Palm away from you and forced you to do it "my
way" on my cellphone system, would that change your mind and make you think
maybe this wouldn't be such a great idea after all?
That's EXACTLY what the combination units are like.
Cellular thinks your phone is THEIRS to control and do with as THEY like.
If "WE" don't want you to do something your palm was designed to do, "WE"
will switch that feature to do what "WE" want it to do, not what YOU want
it to do.
I think it sucks, too, but that's the way it is......
Every time you press the SYNC button on your palm, think about it for a few
days....

Thus, there are some limitations.
But, for what it seems you are looking for, it's great.
Good form factor, price is right - I'm very happy.

What are the limitations? I realize Verizon has crippled it somewhat? Will
it do all my V710 will do as a phone? Is it as good a phone as Motorola
phones generally are?
Does it have a contact database? a calendar?
Should I just buy a Treo or BBerry?
Tnx for the on topic reply.

| The rumors of it being "crippled" are just that - rumors.
Or can very easily be fixed.
Remember, this device has a registry - which can easily be edited...
This isn't a BREW device.
I can do anything I want or need, including DUN via Bluetooth.
What missing BT profile exactly are you referring to?
The RF section is quite good - reviews are good and my experience is too.
Just do the Howard Forums thing, and all is well.
Outlook?? Ever heard of it...? (yes a calendar/contacts - it's a Windows Mobile device)

As it is delivered, it is not a worthy phone as the battery does not last

Depending on specs desired, while the Q is being advertised in the DFW area
for $99 by Verizon, the T-Mobile dash is pretty nice at ~$200. In the $200
range are multiple versions of Blackberry from assorted carriers.
My Hitachi cellular PPC lasted longer than Sprint's favorable rates, so for
the last year I carried it and a RAZR.
I want back to a single device for picture and data capture, plus browser
and local files, so I'll probably go for the HTC Hermes when released;
rumored to be $300- 400.
| |
|
| There's a package for about $80/month but I think you only get 450 minutes.
I just got my Q free through Amazon.com last week by spending $100 for the
phone - now I'm eligible for the $100 rebate on top of it.
Battery sucks though so beware.

Why? All you must ever do is check email and web surf.
No usenet? Then it's not unlimited internet service. 10 gigs a month?
Then it's not unlimited internet service. You can easily replicate

Unlimited internent browsing vs. paying per kb. I need to search for serious
things thru like Google when i am not at home and $45 a month for unlimited
is dirt cheap and profitable for me. I am in Ohio and this is a basic
