LG VX8000 no sound

| My son-in-law's VX8000 all of a sudden has no sound. Not from the earpiece
nor any keytones. It receives calls and will place calls, but that's of
little use without sound. He claims the phone suffered no trauma and the
only thing that looks different is the words "CAR KIT" now displayed on both
screens that wasn't there before.
I tried to find some explanation of this feature in the manual but can find
no reference to it at all. My LG phone has a "Driving Mode" feature toggled
by the Voice Command key when the unit is closed, but pressing the voice key
on the VX8000 when the phone is closed gives a "VOICE MEMO NOT AVAILABLE"
message, which may merely mean none is currently in memory.
Any ideas on either the complete loss of audio or the mysterious "CAR KIT"
on the display?

| Sounds like the phone is confused and thinks an external headset is
installed, therefore, no speaker. Could simply be broken, but maybe going
through the menus may help. Baring an easy fix, a firmware update at the VZW
store may restore it to normal operations.

I'm not familiar with this particular model but it seems to me like
the phone thinks it's connected to a car phone. In other words, some
cars have the ability to use a built in hands free, voice activated
OEM system that relays to the cell phone.
I'd think that if you go into the settings, find where it's set to go
into car mode and disable it, the problem will go away.

looked and can't find it and the manual seems to have no mention of it
(other than notices that a hands-free accessory is available).

Car mode might = bluetooth enabled?

have you tried going into:
From the main menu:
Setup --> Car Use --> settings and disabling car use?

BTW, just as additional input, the message quated above is normal for the
8000. It does not have "Voice Memo" capability.

Maybe, but I couldn't find anything about bluetooth in the menus either.

I see no "Car Use" or anything similar in the Setup or any other menu. That
seems like a logical place to access the Car Kit feature, but I just can't
find it.

I see, thanks. Apparently, though, the VX8000 *does* have a Car Kit feature
that you can't turn off or even read about in the manual.

| It likely got wet. I have seen that type of message on phones that have
been exposed to moisture.
Probably not fixable for a reasonable cost...better to replace it.

VX8100 had it but not the 8000

I see. This one apparently has a "Car Kit" feature, whatever that is, but it
seems to be undocumented. I don't know that this feature is related to the
lack of sound, but it seemed like a good place to start. Unfortunately, no
one seems to know how to Enable/Disable the feature.

Another mentioned water damage. I'm inclined to agree at this point. I
tossed an LG phone that my son had but swore up and down that it didn't
get wet but a visual showed otherwise.

easy to verify. Just open the battery compartment and see if the
white strip has changed color.

It's not my phone, so I can't verify what did or didn't happen to it but I
have looked at closely and had the battery compartment open. It shows no
signs of having been wet at all and, other than normal scrapes around the
corners, shows no signs of trauma. That's not to say it may not have been
dropped, I don't know for sure, but according to the owner it was ok one
night and had "CAR KIT" in the display and no sound whatsoever the next
morning.
As a side note, he went and purchased an ear-bud/mike cord for it but gets
no audio from that either. I can think of no explanation for this other than
a bad audio component of some kind since all the visual features seem to
work ok and the phone still can make and receive calls. If it weren't for
that "CAR KIT" suddenly appearing on the display I'd guess it was a goner,
but I'd be surer if I could turn off that mode and it still had no audio.
Does anyone know if there is some "master reset" for these devices that
might restore the sound, or would that erase information necessary to use it
at all, (such as it's present phone number)? Also, is it advisable to
disassemble the phone to look for broken wires or components?

Try ##data# on the keypad. Might need your pin code.

I'm sure there's a master reset which will put it back to factory
settings. I don't believe it gets rid of the phone number though.
However, the moisture damage may not have any visible signs other than
the moisture strip in the battery compartment changing color.
Of course, the simple question is why isn't this person who owns the
phone just go by a Verizon store and as the tech to take a look at it?
This may be something they're very well aware of and can fix right
there for free. Also, while he's there, he can check to see if
there's any s/w upgrades for the phone as well.

....if you take the battery out, the strip looks like a small, white
piece of tape. About 1/16" of wide and usually no more than 1/4"
long. *Don't* touch it though. And definitely don't be anywhere near
any water source (e.g. rain, checking your phone whilst in the
shower... :-) ), while checking it. The tape, I've been told, is
very sensitive to even humidity. AND, if Verizon sees that the
moisture strip has been activated (e.g. changed color other than
white), the phone warranty is void.

...that's how I found out that there was a s/w upgrade to my Chocolate
phone that gave it speakerphone capability. I'm surprised (ok, not
really), that since Verizon has your phone information in your account
info, that they can't send an automated message when there's a
software upgrade available and what the upgrade does. I would of
never had known if I hadn't gone to the store to replace my wife's
defective Motorola phone.

Yeh I guess that's the way ##3282#. I was googling on vx8000
secret codes and came up with that one. You might try

I ran into that site and found it very interesting.
Anyways, the mystery is solved. The owner of the phone ran into a friend who
has the same phone and to whom the same thing happened! His problem had been
in the charger slot so they got a magnifier and light and took a look. Sure
enough, one of the contacts in the slot had come out of its groove and was
crossed over and shorted onto its neighbor. It snapped right over into its
own spot with a little help from a needle and *presto*, problem solved!
Audio is back and the "CAR KIT" is gone from the display. No idea what that
Car Kit feature was or how to access it, but in my investigating I saw where
lots of phones have undocumented features so maybe that was one of those.

Cool, I was certain is was a physical defect.
