Author S/W upgrade for Samsung A890.. required?

I just had a very annoying trip to the verizon wireless store so I
would like to vent a little bit.

Yesterday I get a postcard from verizon wireless. The postcard says
basically that I need to upgrade the software on my phone to version
YD16 (it also said the CDM-8940 needs to be upgraded too).

So I have time today and I figure I will go to my local verizon
wireless store (in copley square boston).

So the sales people kept thinking I wanted a new phone even though I
told them I need a software upgrade for my phone, so 10 minutes later I
get to the technical support crew. They take my phone and tell me that
it should be ready in 25 minutes. 45 minutes later one of the guys asks
me why I am standing at the counter and I tell him I am waiting for my
phone (my phone is my watch so I didn't know how much time went by). He
gives me my phone and says that I already have the latest software and
they didn't do anything. My phone has vresion XD05 (or XR05 I forget)
and the postcard said I needed YD16 but he explains that the version
numbers go down Z->A. So I say ok and leave the store knowing that this
information doesn't sound right.

I called verizon when I get home and find out I was correct and the
store was wrong. The guy on the phone and the people in the store
didn't seem aware of anything with this postcard. The one on the phone
said he has never seen a required upgrade so he thinks the card just
meant that I should upgrade my software on my phone (the card actually
says the software upgrade is essential).
