continuously connected?
how much connect time does it need to route users?

I believe it is connected continuously since it is using GPS in real-time.
You also have to change the phone location feature from "911 only" to
"Always On" (or words to that effect) so the phone can be continuously
tracked.

No my understanding is that is connected only to get the route.

Not sure, as I have yet to use it, although I do have loaded on my
phone.

From what I know from using mine, it is only connected until it
downloads the route.
It will reconnect if you don't take the same course/directions that
were downloaded.

Right. It downloads the directions and goes from there. If you need
different directions, you'll have to download again. If you deviate from
the route, it will download new directions. This includes missed turns.

It downloads turn info and GPS initialization info, and then can
repeatedly take readings from the GPS satellites and compute its
location without further assistance from the cellular network. This
ability to do multiple fixes and compute its own location from them is
what distinguishes phones that can run apps like VZ-Nav from phones that
have just the e911 capability, where the phone takes the initialization
info, does one GPS reading, and uploads the raw info to the system,
which computes the phone's location and forwards it to the 911 center.

VZ Navigator uses airtime whenever it needs to get your location. This
means you will incur airtime charges whenever you download a map, look
for a place of interest or download directions, including if you go off
route while following directions and VZ Navigator needs to recalculate
directions to your destination. In addition, VZ Navigator may be
required to go back to the network periodically to update GPS
parameters.
What happens if I miss a turn, or if I know a better way?
If you miss a turn, or if you go off route, VZ Navigator will
automatically contact the server and download new directions. ..."
