Do you mean like the TV / Radio commercials " Get a free ringtone -
text message "RINGTONE" to 12345 "?

If you're talking about the above. What do you mean by 'anywhere'?

I think he means is there a directory that one can access that holds these
numbers. I wondered the same thing.

Be careful, though. Someone said if you send a text message SEX to 12345,
some big bruiser named "Bubba" shows up in his studded leather outfit with
a special "swing"....not good.

the five digit text messaging codes are used by servers that send
automated responses to your phone. the most common one (besides the
trashy ringtone at 12345) is information about a location from google.
you can send a text to 46645 and a request, i.e. directions, restaurant
info, movie info - basically the same stuff that you would put into
google for more information. as for getting one of your own, i think
that it requires a server that can communicate with a mobile phone, and
that's configured for SMS. not sure how to do it, but i'm sure a
google search will yield great results. just search for SMS server, or
something along those lines. good luck.

Be very careful about the shortcodes. 46645 for Google is safe, I use
it all the time, but if you're looking online or on tv ads for the Joke
of the day, horoscopes or whatever, it could be a premium text message.
They bill in the download section of your bill at varying rates from
$0.25 each txt up to and probably above $9.99/month. You don't know
until the bill hits. Verizon cannot credit these charges, or usually
even tell you exactly what vendor they're from. We can see they are
received, and can see the initial request sent from the phone so you
will be liable for the charges. If you see this on your bill, send a
txt to the shortcode you're receiving with the words, stop, quit, end,
or exit in it. Typically you get a txt confirmation when you
unsubscribed to the service. If your kids want the joke of the day,
weather, whatever, get it at vtext.com, no charge other than normal txt
charges according to your package. Also tell kids with phones not to
let other kids play with their phones. If they see regular txt msgs
they didnt sign up for, get it taken care of immediately. Txt, get it
now, and mobile web can all be blocked at no charge if you want to.
