it is a usenet newsgroup, responsive to the wishes of its readers.
when a minority tries to censor content, that is not a good thing. i
urge you to create a moderated group where you can control the
content.
modern newsreaders have filters and kill files. use them for this
group to eliminate the materials you wish not to read. but don't
presume to eliminate the content others may wish to read.
censorship is a very ugly thing.

Most internet newsgroups have posting guidelines or rules that the
posters are at least "encouraged" to follow. This is a Verizon cellular
discussion group. It is not ebay and it is not here to sell or exchange
goods ... and any attempt to use it for such is, IMO, inappropriate.
This has nothing to do with censorship. It's basic internet courtesy.

censorship. A discussion group is not the place for bartering. Learn

Okay, forget that. I didn't even read the spam post and didn't realize it
wasn't an eBay auction.

I don't remember seeing any such "guidelines" posted for
alt.cellular.verizon, so certainly if they exist, I don't think anyone
has been "encouraged" to follow them.

No it isn't. Which is why the OP posted an article explaining that he
had a Verizon cell phone for sale on ebay, in case anyone was interested.
He didn't conduct the bids here, nor did he complete the transaction
here. He simply mentioned it for anyone interested. Given that the
equipment he was selling was relevant to the carrier being discussed, it
seemed pretty relevant to me.
If the OP was selling a Sprint, Alltel, Cingular, or T-Mobile-specific
phone, then I can see where it would be a big deal and considered
irrelevant spam. Likewise if the guy was trying to sell a get rich
quick scheme, cheap non-oem knockoff accessories, or various "male
enhancing" drugs. Or, if he flooded the group with 5, 10, 100 different
copies of the same posting, that too could reasonably be considered
annoying and rude.
Instead, it's an individual who has a Verizon phone he doesn't want to
use anymore, and if anyone wants to buy it off him, then here's how to
do it, posted one time only. Seems reasonable enough to me. In fact
we've generated far more noise debating the merits of such a post than
the actual post itself.

And IMO, it's fortunate that you're not this group's moderator. If
you'd like to create a moderated group where you have content control of
what's being discussed, then you have every right to do so, by following
the steps in the faq at this URL:
