Author Getting Voicemail in Mexico-Warning !

I just got back from Mexico and got my Verizon bill. While I was there I saw
the little envelope on the phone saying I had a message. Saw I dialed * 86
to get the message . I tried it several time and never got it to work. When
I got the bill I noticed that each time I called attempting to get my
voicemail, I was charged $2.30 . I think that is an outrageous charge for a
call that did not even work. I called Verizon customer sevice and they said
that they could do nothing because they were "pass through" charges. She also
said voicemail will only work when connected to a Verizon tower. So I guess
I am stuck with an expensive learning experience. I am on an Americas
Choice plan. with international calling.

For future trips to Mexico, you might want to get a Mexican calling card
at any pharmacy. They can be used in the ubiquitous pay phones down
there. It costs ten pesos (around 50 cents) a minute to call the US.
That's how I checked our Verizon cell phone voice mail down there.

Curious. They call it specifically pluralized as the "Americas".

No. It's "America's Choice"

Well, a hard lesson maybe, but that is one way to learn. I found using my
VZW phone with International access turned on better than the local calling
cards. (calling-cards require being located at specific calling-card public
phones). Using your own costs more, but is still portable. Mexico has some
of the best International rates for VZW.

Anyway... some things never change...

- International calling is expensive
- When out of your "home" area (America!) most/all of the "*xx" numbers do
not work.
- If you dial your own phone number in its entirety, just as any other US
number you'd dial from Mexico, including country code, you can still check
your VM.

I have international dialing. It costs me $.69 plus $.13 service charge for
a total of $. 82 per minute to call the US. I guessing when I dialed *86 it
was billed as a local call and because it had a large local charge.

The $0.69/min + $0.13 is a VZW charge. The $2.30 (or similar from your
previous post) is a Mexican local connect charge (one per call). Still, a
three minute call from Mexico is around $4.50. A 6 minute call would be
around $6.60. Not bad as far as International rates go.

I realize that since you didn't know about the connect charge, and you had a
bunch of connects that failed to produce the intended outcome, that this is
still hard to take. Just commenting, that's all.

I found that lowest cost comes when you use a cell phone in the US with the
Individual LD plan which costs $3.99 a month to call a landline phone in
Mexico. The total cost is $.09 per minute. You just have to make sure you
don't go over your allowed minutes. In calling does not apply. The $3.99
charge you can start and stop with no penalties and they prorate it.

No, actually it's the possessive, as in "America's Choice"...
