Making your own ringtones
|
|
|
| I know this is possible to make a ringtone-but has anyone done it with
Verizon. I have a Samsung A950. I think it has to be in .mid form, but maybe
in mp3 form. I made a mp3 one, but it doesn't go into my ringtone menu, but
instead to the my songs menu.
Also, can you transfer wallpaper and pics to the phone from the computer
without going thru Verizon?

Not sure if bitpim supports your phone, but if it does then you can transfer
pics and mp3/midi files to/from the phone. Do a search for bitpim on the net
and you'll find it (it's open source freeware, and in fact Roger Binns, one
of (if not THE author) the Bitpim developers hangs out on this newsgroup
once in a while.
I've got a Motorol E815 and use the transflash card that I have for it to
transfer pics and ringers to/from the phone. I've created a few of my own
MP3 files for ringers too.

| How are you transferring ringers from the TransFlash to the phone?
I have the E815 and a TransFlash card. I've been able to transfer pictures,
but haven't discovered how to make MP3 and MID files available for use as
ring tones. I've been able to copy pictures to the phone for use as
wallpaper, associate with contacts, etc. I can also copy sounds from the
phone to the TransFlash. But, I haven't been able to copy sounds from the
TransFlash to the phone, nor have I been able to get the phone to look on
the TransFlash for ring tones.
Is this something that requires a cable and external software? I would've
thought it could be done using just the TransFlash and the phone's own O/S.
Using the media gallery, the Copy feature shows up for pictures on the
TransFlash, but it doesn't show up for sounds that are on the TransFlash (it
does show up for sounds already on the phone). Is there some place else I
should be looking?

| I have a Samsung A950 and recently installed Bitpim. Bitpim doesn't support
the 950 yet. Last I read, one of the programmers was asking to borrow
anyone's 950 for a few weeks so they could crack it. Bitpim just doesn't
recognize the 950 when it's hooked up. I have a feeling it may be related to
the DRM software for the Vcast music, but what do I know?

Just send a 'fake' text message with the sound file (on the transflash card)
as an attachment to a 'fake' number (such as 555-555-5555). The text message
will fail of course and then you'll find it in your outbox and can then save
the sound file to your phone. It's a bit cumbersome, but it works...:-)

| When I try to do that, it shows only the sound files that are stored in the
phone's memory. It won't let me attach anything that's on the TransFlash
card.

Did you do a 'switch storage device' (to the transflash card) prior to
making the message??
This is an E815 we're talking about, right?? What firmware version does your
phone have? Mine is the original 8720_01.17.03. Maybe that's the problem??

| Yes. E815. I finally succeeded, but it defies logic.
Turns out that it matters where you start. When trying to attach a sound
file to a text message, there is no option to change storage devices. If I
tell it I'm going to send a PIX message, then there is the option to change
storage devices, and oddly enough, it lets me attach a sound file (but not a
large one -- it doesn't say what the limit it, but it tells me I've exceeded
memory if the file is not tiny). Hence, I sent an MID file, but no MP3s.
I'll have to make my excerpts smaller for that.
