The default message view pretty much shows everything, from inbox to
sent messages to SMS to even missed calls. You can change this on your
device by clicking on the thumbwheel and selecting "Options," then
selection "General Options" in the menu that follows. There you can set
the device to "Hide Sent Messages" and, if you wish, "Hide Filed
Messages." This will show only your new inbox messages (well actually,
it'll probably also show SMS and incoming calls still, but that's still
better than your previous situation).
