Voice Mail System Does Not Hear DTMF Tones

| I am a Verizon user out of Chicago and have the below problem with
multiple phones (Mot v60s, Mot 815).
When checking voicemail (using *86) in Chicago I can start entering
plus my 4-digit password plus "#" as soon as I hear the greeting. The
first tone interupts the prompt and I have access to my mailbox.
Anywhere outside of the Chicagoland area it seems like the voicemail
system does not "hear" the DTMF tones as soon as the call connects to
*86. I have to wait for the lady to finish her sentence "Please enter
your password..." before I enter any digits. If I start entering
digits right away (as I do in Chicago) the prompt keeps speaking and my
tones do not interupt it. I end up having to re-enter the password if
I started to soon.
Does anyone experience this? If so, is there a fix?
Thanks,
Mike

Yes, wait until the prompt is finished before entering your passcode.

Skip the manual entry all together. I have a voice-prompted autodial setup
on my Motorola V60i that will work on any system, internal or not....
The number it dials is:
(area code)(your cell number)pp(your password)
The pp makes it delay until the voice prompt on the voicemail system is
done speaking. Add more p's to make it pause longer. Two pauses is
perfect on Alltel when she says, "Please enter your security code."
I've programmed that phone book entry with the voiceprompt "voicemail" so I
don't have to take my hands off the wheel. Flip open the phone, press the
voice prompt button on the side and say "voicemail". It dials, she
answers, it waits til she's done and touchtones my password. Because I
don't use *86, or whatever internal voicemail number someone else's system
uses, this will call my voicemail even from Smiley's Cellphone and Tire
system in Podunk. (That's Smiley up there on the billboard holding the
bagphone handset to his ear with the big shiteatin' grin on his face
leanin' on a tractor tire.) Make sure you have your area code in the
initial dialing so Smiley's system will know it's long distance.
Works great...(c;
