Thinking of a razr

| I am not a huge cell gagdet hound. I mostly just need to make calls,
check the time, etc. I am not a fan of belt clips, so I like it be
relatively small so I can pocket it. I prefer a moto flip style phone
with verizon service. My moto v60 was officially pronounced dead today
and I need a new phone. Unfortunately that means signing a new
contract, but such is life.
My first question is: is there anything new on the way that I should
hold out for. I know cell phones are always coming out, but didn't know
if something was right on the horizon.
For people who have the razr
1)Is the ring volume high?
2)I have heard there are combatibility issues with the accessories.
Does it come with a charger(outlet) and hands-free or do I need to buy
those seperately?
3)Is it fairly durable (enough to withstand the occaisonal drop)
4)I don't understand the whole "crippled bluetooth" and limitations
with software. Can I d/l ringtones and skins/wallpapers.
5)Does it have decent battery life?
Thanks in advance for any assistance

Yes. I keep mine in my jean side pocket. As long as the speaker is facing
outwards, so not blocked completely against my leg, ringer is plenty high.

What accessories?

SepArately. (Sorry, most misspelled word on the web!) Comes with
travel-style (USB cable) plug-in charger or you can simply plug into USB
outlet on a computer to charge. Hands-free built in. Good, loud, excellent
speakerphone.
> 3)Is it fairly durable (enough to withstand the occaisonal drop)
Don't think I would want to drop on concrete -- as for any other phone.
Seems about as durable as any mobile phone except those especially built and
sold for extra durability. Many have reported problem with loose keypad.
Mine is a tiny bit loose at the top but no problem. Can fix yourself via
instructions in HowardForums, if you need to. But make sure keypad is nice
and solid when you buy phone.
> 4)I don't understand the whole "crippled bluetooth" and limitations

Verizon has attempted to block your ability to get ringtones and pix any way
but by paying them to download over their air, so you have to get around
that or do business with them.
I use Motorola Phone Tools software to move pics, ringtones, etc. in and out
of my phone but that requires a little programming. If you have the newer
Razr software, then you have to do a little more than I did. But all info
is in HowardForums. Bummer but I think applies to all their phones. So,
bottom line, you have to work around Verizon if you want to do these things.
> 5)Does it have decent battery life?
Less, I understand, than many phones. Price you pay for thinness and
lightness. If you talk much at all, you will charge every night. If long
battery life is very important to you, then you will need a larger, heavier
phone with larger battery.

I'd challenge that statement. I'll bet "alot" is the most misspelled word.
Since there is no such word as "alot". LOL!

They make a larger battery for it. Screen is bigger then some phones. So the
bigger it is the more it takes from the battery.

Not really... Find a good used phone on eBay and just have Verizon change the
phone MSN on your account.

Unfortunately, Verizon isn't the kind of cell carrier that really offers
the kind of information. We usually find out about about things coming
up by rumor and speculation. So far, no real rumors have popped up
about new phones, so I'd have to assume nothing really exciting is
coming out for a while.

I *had* a RAZR before switching to a Blackberry.
> 1)Is the ring volume high?
Yes, it can be.
> 2)I have heard there are combatibility issues with the accessories.

Of course the RAZR comes with an outlet charger. It does not come with
its own handsfree however. Also, bear in mind that the RAZR does NOT
have a universal headset jack. If you want to use a handsfree, it must
be bluetooth.
> 3)Is it fairly durable (enough to withstand the occaisonal drop)
I dropped my RAZR once, on pavement as it slipped out of a coat pocket
while I was getting out of a car. The phone landed on one of the hinges.
Interestingly, the RAZR was fine and it was the pavement that suffered
the damage: some black pavement-stuff ended up adhering to the hinge
area of the RAZR. With a little elbow grease and buffing with a
microfiber cloth, I was able to get the stuff off and the phone looked
good as new.
But even so, I wouldn't willingly repeat that episode.
Additionally, spare parts seem readily available for the RAZR. I know
someone who managed to crack the outside display lens (which appears to
be glass, not plastic). He was about to take the phone in to see if his
insurance would replace it, but before he spent $50 on the deductible,
and I searched around and discovered that http://www.cnn.cn sells the
lens he broke for $5.99 + shipping, along with a wide variety of other
random OEM components on the cheap. He bought a new front glass lens,
it arrived in a week, and once again the phone was good as new.

Yes you can, IF they are from Verizon's Get it Now service. The whole
point of crippling the bluetooth functions has been to restrict people
to using Verizon's service to download ringtones and skins, rather than
using other websites or OBEX push to obtain them from other sources.
> 5)Does it have decent battery life?
Mine lasted for a couple of days between charges. I generally use about
100 minutes of airtime a month.

My mistake, I missed a zero... make that closer to 1000 minutes per month.

My other candidate for that honor would be "loose" for "lose".

| Verizon wireless had, has them on there web site. Don't know the specs but
they do list them. Try Ebay. But beware of non OEM one's.
