Author Accessing Internet via Blackberry 7250 and Verizon Data Plan

I've seen a few items about using one's blackberry as a modem to dial
out from a laptop, but I don't believe I've seen one where the user
attempts to access the internet using the phone's dataplan on the
Verizon network. I'm not an expert on the technologies involved, so
please bear with my ignorance . . .

I would like to know if there's a means by which I can use my
Blackberry 7250 either via the USB connector or Bluetooth to grant
internet access to my laptop. I have the unlimited data plan with
Verizon.

Your data plan (at least if its any of the handset data plans or the
blackberry data plan) prohibits use of the data plan by tethering the
handset to a laptop. Also, the Verizon version of the Blackberry 7250
has this capability locked out. There are ways around this physical
limitation, but not around the legal restriction in your plan.

I don't believe that is true any longer. Isn't it true that VZW has recently
(maybe Feb 1st?) backed off their stance on this and now allow tethering? A
rep in a VZW store just yesterday stated to me that it was fine. As long as
you had the proper cable or connection. They don't necessarily "support" it
on the help desk but do not prohibit it like they used to.

I know you can probably find an on-line reference that contradicts this, but
this is what the rep said (yawn LOL) and what I read recently. The online
docs are usually not updated as soon as the rules change, I don't think.

Yes you can. I do it all the time.

However, it costs a bit extra. You need a $15/month add-on called
"BroadbandAccess Connect." Call up Verizon's data tech support via 611,
and they'll set it up for you.

Once that's added, you download this software:

http://vzw.smithmicro.com/download/index.html

Install it, and hook up your phone via USB. Using it, you'll be able to
get on the internet.

Also, make sure your 7250 has the latest firmware. Many 7250's shipped
without EVDO enabled. The latest firmware enables EVDO and makes the
connection quite fast for wireless. I don't even bother with WiFi
anymore, unless I'm in an area covered only by 1X (and even then, the
WiFi better be free) ;)

That's simply not true, ESPECIALLY of the Blackberry handsets, in which
Verizon clearly advertises tether capability:

http://tinyurl.com/94yjk

The second link especially shows it in big bright red letters: "The
first EV-DO capable BlackBerry device in the country and it can be used
in the BroadbandAccess network for dialing up to the internet!"

The only caveat is that you need to add the BBA Connect to your account,
which on a blackberry is an additional $15 for unlimited tethering.
Still a lot cheaper than the $60 add on require of laptop cards and
traditional phones. And even when you combine the cost of voice,
blackberry and data, you're still saving money.

I think the tethering prohibition was removed some months ago.

What do you get for $15? The ability to use the blackberry tethered for
data on a MOU basis or is data use "off the clock"?

Just for clarification please...

Is that then, $45 for a PDA data plan (assuming PDA purchase and contract, I
know) PLUS $15 for tethering? For a total of $60?

I'm figuring this to all be in ADDITION to an existing voice plan.

Thanks,

That's because you cleared your cookies. Enter the zip code and, viola,
info is there.

It's off the clock, as is all EVDO access. Even on a "casual" basis,
EVDO data access is charged by kilobyte, not by airtime.

Without a voice plan, yes.

> I'm figuring this to all be in ADDITION to an existing voice plan.

If you want this in additional to a voice plan, you can get the bundled
data voice/data plans which give you a discount on the data service.
You get $5 off on the basic "Core Choice" plan (450 minutes), and up to
$15 off the total data charge if you go for a plan with a lot of airtime
(1000 minutes?).
