Author Do I HAVE to have data plan to buy a Treo?

Hi. I have a family share plan I'm happy with. Just cellular, no data plan.
My family all have plain cellphones. Now, I'd like to upgrade my phone to a
smartphone (actually a PocketPC/cellphone, like the Treo 700w, UT Starcom
XV6700, or Samsung i730). If I log onto verizonwireless.com and select
"Upgrade my phone", these PDA phones are listed as possible upgrades. I
don't want the internet access with this new phone; I just want the same
cellular plan I already have. I'll only use the PDA phone to connect to my
Wifi network at home (like I do with my PocketPC now). I would think I'd get
a prompt saying I have to upgrade my plan. Right now, the website just lists
an automatic checkbox on the option to use data on a per-use basis (which
costs nothing if you don't use it).

So, my question is: can I just upgrade my phone to one of these PocketPC
phones, without changing my calling plan? I like my current plan, and just
want a nicer, more versatile device with which to use it. Thanks in advance.

Depends on what you mean by "without changing my calling
plan". You don't have to change your current voice plan. You
will/may have to *add* a data plan. The data plans tack on like
adding a feature. The per-use basis is the most expensive per
kilobyte but costs nothing if you don't use it.

No. You must add a data plan.

I was able to get a Treo from Cingular without the data plan. Officially
not allowed but the salesperson said there was a workaround, called her
supervisor and got it done. Your results may vary. BTW, Verizon Wireless
was unwilling to do this without the data plan. They therefore lost me
after 10 years as a customer.

I tend to disagree with both the previous posts. I purchased a Treo
through eBay and was able to switch my service to my new Treo and I do
not have a data plan on it currently. I'm not sure what you all are
saying when you go in, but I definitely was able to activate my Treo
without a data plan.

All-

Thanks for the responses. I think I have a handle on this now: apparently,
if you buy one of these PDA phones, Verizon requires you select 1) a
"per-use" data plan ($0.00, unless you use it--then you pay per Kb or Mb),
2) a 10MB data plan ($25) or 3) an unlimited data plan ($50 I think). So if
you go with #1, you're not actually incurring any data charges unless you go
on their EVDO data network.

So I believe the answer to my question is technically YES (you have to pick
one of the three above), but NO, you don't necessarily have to pay any money
for the plan (if you don't use it). Does anyone agree with this?

Yea, that's my understanding. I'm not so sure about only
being charged for EVD0 data. I'd agree completely if you
take out the EVD0. "You're not actually incurring any data
charges unless you go on their data network.". (there is
1X, Q2N, etc.) I think that covered your concern though.

Just to confuse the issue even more... I got mine when I lived in a 1x/Q2N
area (Spokane Wa), and was never charged, but now I am in Vegas (an EVDO
area) on vacation, and am getting warned that I will be charged if I use it
(here on EVDO)... Wonder if there is a way of forcing it to the non-evdo?
Will I get charged for non evdo use in an evdo area?
