New phone but contract not expired yet

| Hi all,
My daughter wants one of the new Pink Razr phones (of course). We still
have another year on our contract. Whats the best way to get this phone
cheap without paying too much and use it as a replacement phone on our
existing contract? Can we buy one off of eBay or some similar place and get
it activated in place of our existing phone?
Thanks,

| Yes you can.

Verizon will probably allow you to upgrade after a year if you extend
your contract two more years, they have with me. Check their website,
it'll let you know if you're eligible.

| Just FYI... VZW will honor the "new contract" price if you extend by 2 years
and you are past the 1 year mark on your present contract. That prevents you
from paying the "full retail" price. However, if you were on the New Every
Two, you will not be able to use that for this purchase if you are under the
NE2 criteria. Your NE2 date will start fresh with this purchase. Keep in
mind that only the primary phone on a Family plan is eligible for NE2
anyway.

Yes I believe this is true, though I'm not positive, they might ask you to
do two more years ON TOP of what you already have, so basically you 1 year
left plus another 2 years.

No. Never. Currently the longest contract you can have is
two years out from today.

Always amazes me that somewhat otherwise intelligent people are so silly
when it comes to cellphones/discounts...
To answer the original question, for sure you can get a phone elsewhere and
activate it (got three off ebay and the latest from alltel).. Seems silly to
wait for/worry about a NE2 discount and pay MORE with the discount, than you
can buy it for elsewhere, and lock yourself into a new contract/extension.
To change the ESN from any phone you get elsewhere, go to the verizon
website and get/activate an account, log in, go to my account, activate new
phone, put in the ESN of the new phone.. In about 5 minutes or less, it will
be active and working.. Saves $35 from going into a verizon store and paying
for them to do it...
If you get it on ebay, make sure it is a verizon CDMA phone (about $200),
they have a whole bunch for other carriers/GSM phones for about $140, those
cheaper GSM ones will NOT work on verizon.
Just a suggestion, if you have kids, you will probably be doing this
whenever a new phones comes out/gets advertized.. May as well figger out how
to do it and save money..:)

The new every 2 is really 50 dollars every year isn't it. So you would
still get 50 bucks off the new phone and THEN start over on the NE2.
Basically NE2 maxes out at 100 bucks in two years but you can use it after
one year to get a $50 discount.

Always a good idea to call VZW with the ESN *before*
purchasing to see if they will activate it. If the seller won't
give the ESN prior to the sale don't buy it. They won't activate
phones reported as stolen. Not a problem with new phones
but they won't activate phones that are not e911 capable
either.

What's silly is to pay money for a phone that's free if you extend your
contract. If you're not happy with Verizon, get a free phone elsewhere
and have a contract with them, I'm staying with Verizon as long as
they'll let me since they no longer offer the plan I have and it ends
if I ever let the contract run out.... the contract I have benefits me
WAAAAAAAY more than it benefits Verizon.

No, they didn't add two years to the remaining time, they just extended
the contract so that I'd have a full two years remaining.

No, that's not it.
NE2 is *now* (forget the change date, think it was February 06) $50 for
plans less than $79.99 and still $100 for plans $79.99 and above. It has
nothing to do with gaining more "credit" as the contract rolls from 1 to 2
years. It is a completely separate date and computation.
If you exercise your privilege to buy a new phone at "with 2-year contract"
prices after you have passed one year on your current contract, and before
you have completed your NE2 requirements, you will NOT receive any NE2
discount at all. But you will be able to get the phone at "with contract"
prices, rather than full retail (big difference!).

Yes, I think that it has changed recently, because it used to be the way I
described (and was told that several times by a few different Verizon
people. Only on the sign at the Verizon store it said NE2 was valid for
any plans over 34.99, not 79.99 (this was about 4 weeks ago, on a Verizon
sign at the actual store.

Wouldn't that be "new every one"? I know it used to be that for the first 10
months in a 12 month contract, they were running at a deficit and that they
couldn't actually claim profit until after that time had elapsed. If you
assume a similar ratio, then I think 20 months might be the cut-off ... so
somewhere after the one and one half year point. You should call them, but I
suspect they won't offer you a subsidized solution until they pass the
break-even point.

Just out of cuiosity, did you even check to see if it is available from
verizon?
I looked under my zip code, and no such phone, but under my sisters zip
code, the phone was there.....
Maybe you ought to see if it is even available in your area... If not, they
have bunches of em on ebay...

No. It's *never* been that way. I suspect you're confusing
NE2 with 1 or 2 year subsidized prices. The NE2 is completely
independent of 1 or 2yr discount prices on phones.

yet again... do not confuse NE2 with 1yr or 2yr discount

No, they offer a $50 discount on a one year contract and a $100 credit
on a two year contract.
If you go to their website and click on the upgrade and it says you're
eligible for the upgrade then it's $50 off if you sign for one year and
$100 off if you sign for two years and it doesn't seem to matter how
long you've been on the previous contract within some some limits (I
can't find anything that says in black and white just how long before
you can upgrade but it's less than two years.)
I've had my phone about 3 months now and I just checked and I'm not
eligible for upgrade, when I last upgraded I'd had my previous phone
about 11 months and I was allowed to upgrade. One, a few years back,
I lost my phone, I'd had it about 6 months. When I called to ask for a
replacement they said I was eligible for the "Once every two" and sent
me one free so who knows? I do know it's less than two years and more
than 3 months.... ;-)

Mmmmmm... maybe it's semantics. If I get a new phone and a new service
I'm offered a "discount" on the phone price, if I get a new phone on
the every two year plan I'm offered a "credit" on the new phone.
Either way, I pay less.

Well, someone already stated it and it's somewhere on
the web site.
And it has everything to do with when you last upgraded.
Note: that I said upgraded and not contract.
Note2: we're talking about upgrade prices and not NE2.
NE2 is like an independent credit to be applied to whatever
price you are going to pay. NE2 has it's own conditions
which may or may not coincide with the upgrade conditions.
Consider purchasing new equipment with a new contract
as an "upgrade". This comes into play if you do not upgrade
as soon as possible or at the end of a contract. This also
comes into play if you change plans in the middle of a
contract to take promotions and extend your contract
(essentially signing a new one). In these cases your
upgrade elegibility date is different than your contract
date.
If you upgrade for the one year price/discount you are
eligible for an upgrade 11 months later. If you upgrade
for the 2 year price/discount you are eligible for an
upgrade 22 months later.
If you take an upgrade you will commit to 1 or 2 years
more from the date of the upgrade depending on whether
you go for the 1 or 2 year discount price.
So lets say I sign up for 1 year and buy a phone at the
1 year price. 6 months later they run a promo plan and
I switch to that. That extends my contract another 6
months (actually I started a new 1 year contract when
I switched). 5 months after that I would be eligible for
an equipment upgrade even though I had another
7 months left on my current contract. I could upgrade
for the 1 year or 2 year price and "extend" my contract
either 1 or 2 years from the upgrade date.
If you stick with NE2 and are eligible for NE2 you can
apply that credit on top of the 2 year discount price
(it's going to be the 2 year discount price since NE2
requires you to commit for another 2 years). You
may have been eligible for an equipment upgrade
long before you were eligible for NE2.

No, I've never gotten a 1 year contract, ever, but I have been offered a 50
dollar discount after one year with my current phone to get a new one,
regardless of the contract, with the option to get 100 dollars the next
year. Again, I think the policy has changed, and you are correct now, but
it has been that way at some point I'm sure of it.

Not so, refer to the part of my post you snipped.

Correct but.....
You're missing the point, the point is that the NE2 terms and
conditions are spelled out on Verizon's website but they do NOT adhere
to their own conditions every time, there seems to be a lot of
flexibility.
The ONLY way to know if you're eligible to upgrade under the NE2 policy
is to go to the website and check. If they say you're not, wait a
month or two and try again or try calling them. Possibly when I lost
my phone after 6 months they made an exception and allowed the full
$100 credit?
BTW, this might help someone. My personal experience (and that of some
others) is that you can upgrade, get answers, help, etc. on the website
or on the phone but if you go to the Verizon store you get to deal with
idiots that have no clue about anything. I don't know why that should
be? Other areas may vary but it's been true for me in Phoenix, my son
in Fresno and in Cincinnati....

We did go by the verizon store and were told only our primary line on the
family plan can be upgraded. It wont be eligible until July, but thats not
the phone we need to upgrade.
Verizon had the phone but wouldnt offer any help with a cheaper price.
Based on your reply, it looks like we will try and find one cheaper and then
get verizon to activate it online.
Thanks again for all your help

Do NOT go to the Verizon store and talk to the mouth breathers there!
Call Verizon! You may not do any better but at least you'll be talking
to people who know what a cell phone is and have IQs higher than their
shoe size.

I know that originally you said you wanted to upgrade 2
phones but you can upgrade the primary line and then
move your phones around as desired.
You could upgrade you primary line phone. If you do
it at the store and they insist on activating it on the primary
line you can do so and then go home and activate it on
the secondary line. Then re-activate your original primary
phone on the primary line. You can do this on the web
page once you have registered for an account online
(you can do that on the web page too). I've needed
to swap phones, substitute, etc. on occassion and just
selected "other" for the reason and they were activated
in less than 10 minutes.
Note: If the phone that will be deactivated when you activate
the replacement is not e911 capable you will not be able to
reactivate it. Call and check first if it's old.
I've done this over the phone. Secondary needed a new
phone and primary was eligible. I just told the CSR
what I wanted to do and they said no problem and shipped
the phone to me.
The ESN (Electrical? Serial Number) associates that physical
phone with a line (number). This needs to be entered so the
network knows that for the next step. You dial *228 and the
network recognizes the ESN and when you select option 1
it downloads the phone number, etc. etc. "programming"
the phone.
By the way they seem to be clearing out their LG VX5200s
and the online special looks like you buy most any phone
and get up to 3 vx5200s free. I don't know the terms and
conditions.

Then why did you post an incorrect comment? Seems you're not
experienced enough in this one area to know what's best for one person
isn't best for everybody.

At least you're consistently wrong..
> It's up to me what I feel are silly comments or not, not you..
And it's up to everyone else to tell you when you're incorrect in your
opinion.
> Dang nazi, ever hear of freedom of speech?
Freedom of speech is what allows you to post your opinion, it's also
what allows the rest of us to tell you your opinion is wrong or do you
think freedom of speech applies only to you?
