Author Any phones which have *real* address book?
Doug

My wife and I have used Kyocera 7135s for the past couple of years and
we loved them. Unfortunately, they both just died and it looks like we
may not be able to get Verizon to reactivate them even if we get them
fixed. So, we're trying to find a new phone that works for us.

We don't really need full-blown PDA functionality but we must have
phones that can sync with Outlook, maintain multiple phone numbers,
email addresses, *and* a street address for each contact.

We like the Motorola E815 and it has a large address book with multiple
numbers per name but it apparently can not store street addresses.

Are there any phones currently offered by Verizon that support a more
complete address book?

We have not completed ruled out migrating to a newer PDA model like a
Treo 700p, but we strongly prefer a folding phone and we don't really
need full PDA functionality.

Thanks for any help.

ASk them about a Samsung i600. It's considered a smartphone as well, but
I do believe if you tell VZW to activate it on a pay for use data acct, the
monthly recurring for Data is $0. If you use it though, it's expensive.
Your normal voice plan can stay as is.

An i600 has a Windows 2003 OS and will synch w/ outlook.

You can pick up a used one in mint cond for about $125 on eBay

You could put the street address in other fields.

Yes, good point. I routinely use the "email2" field in my LG VX8000 for
general notes (i.e. address, phrases, call/do-not-call times, etc.). I
adopted this practice when I traded away from a phone that had a "notes"
field.

I do it with my RAZR. Lots of fields to choose from and it can be sync'd
with MS Outlook although I haven't used that function. And I suppose it
could sync with my Palm Tung T3 if I wanted to play.

make sure you remove their network connection though because it will dial
out on its own. Would suck if you hit the PIE button and surfed all night
for 10 cents a kb while asleep.

You won't like this: I've had a fair bit of luck replacing my 7135 with
another 7135. it is still the best phone (in my opinion). Surprisingly,
when I went to have the replacement 7135 put on the line, they just did it.
Officially, and by all standards, this isn't supposed to happen. But I've
done it three time for me, and other clients over the last few months. It
just works... I don't ask for any special help. There are no guarantees in
life: but if you love the 7135 as much as I do: get it repaired, and try
it. Still the best phone out there... and the only smart phone flip. dr

I still have the 7135 and find it a great phone, albeit a bit large and
ugly. May go over to the Treo700p if I can get my company to pay the
monthly charges and this will be much higher than what I currently pay
with my 7135. I do prefer a flip phone, but do not think anuything new
with a palm OS will be coming out soon.

However my wife uses the Samsung 600i and has found it works very well.
This is a Windows unit, and has all the associated slowness and
cumbersome menus. However she is not a technophile and has used this
successfully for the last two years. It syncs perfectly with Outlook,
allowing her to keep her contacts and calendar updated.

The Samsung is also a flip phone and smaller than the 7135. Looks much
more like a real cell phone, as the 7135 is a bit embaressing to take
out when folks gawk and think I am using some type of archaic phone
from the old days.

Good luck!

Do not be embarrassed. It is an awesome phone (7135) when it works: Oddly
people complain that its screen is too small, which means it must be even
bigger to satisfy. A antique? Not hardly: pictures, directory assistance,
calculator, microsoft word/excel/power point, slide shows, web browsing on
real web sites, near infinite address book, expanded memory, mp3 player, and
it will even play video (although not the best). I'd say that this antique,
although missing a camera, has everything on it that the "new" phones are
trying to do. And you can do most of these features without paying for
"extra" downloads. Like pushing your music collection to the phone, making
your own ringtones (easy).... yes, an antique phone for sure.... the 7135.
Why I still prefer it as the only PDA flip phone on the market. dr

Hey all,

We are using the 7135 at my work for some of the vehicles in our
shuttle van fleet. The key, we found out, was to find one 911
compliant. That way Verizon can activate it.

That puts the ops manager who suggested the model to us in a bit of a
pickle, as he has one but it's NOT E911 compliant, and he's been told
if he ever had to have it reactivated, or put a different # on it, or
whatever, that VZW wouldn't be able to help him.

A quick check of ebay reveals:

http://cgi.ebay.com/Kyocera-7135-Ve...View

And no, I am not the seller, or related to him/her in any way. I just
put kyocera 7135 911 as my search terms. Only got one good hit, but at
least it's a place to start.

My 7135 and several others we purchased in 2003 are all e911. This Kyocera
press release from Oct 02 mentions their "new" e911 phones & the soon to be
released (at that time) 7135 in the same sentence.

I thought non-activation of Kyo 7135's by VZ was not an e911 issue.

There are NO 7135's that are e911 compliant (current requirement).
There were 2 phases of "e911 compliance" and the 7135 only meets
phase 1. VZW requires phase 2 compliance to activate.

I think I would check with Kyocera instead of the eBay seller....
You can email them off their website.
