My Treo 700W has this tendency to connect to the internet and stay
connected, unattended, for 30-50 minutes at a time. I don't have the
unlimited data plan since I rarely need internet access, but don't
want to cut off that feature in case I do. I've done a hard reset in
the past and it seemed to stop it, but this month's bill had a $244
data charge! Is this common to this phone to do this? Verizon is
sending me a new phone, but I'm beginning to wonder if this is part
and parcel of the Treo 700W.

I have the unlimited data plan and notice that the phone stays
connected for long periods of time BUT it makes sense to me. My phone
was purchased to help me stay connected to work via MS Exchange email.
When you go to the internet can you not disconnect from the session?

Supposedly it is a "feature" for thje phone to always stay connected (which
is pretty dumb IMHO). I would check that your email settings are not
automatically going on the internet to check for mail periodically, as it
will not disconnect when its done. What type of email do you have set-up on
the device?

I set it up to check my web mail which I rarely use, since it gets
very few emails (gmail). My settings were every 15 minutes to check
it. It hasn't charged me for date for 90 days then boom, $244 for
data alone. I am beginning to realize that the problem is having it
check every 15 minutes. I thought I was only getting charged for
emails, which are few, but it must be charging me to check the emails
whether they are there or not. I took off the check mail feature.
Some Tech support at Verizon say it's not suppose to stay on and is
sending me another phone. Others say differently. My hunch is that
it is running up the data charges with this checking for emails every
15 seconds.
