Samsung a950 - I just want a decent ringtone. How do I put on in?

| I have Verizon's Samsung a950. The default ringtones are horrible, and
I think the reason for this is to encourage you to buy a ringtone. I
looked into it (a bit) and these ringtone sites want a monthy fee and
the ringtone is only valid for a year - these are absolutely
unacceptable terms in my book.
I uploaded MP3s to the phone and then discovered that I couldn't use
them as ringtones. I ran around on the web a bit and on some geek
boards it was discussed how to get around these limitations. One site
suggested attaching a sound to a text message and forwarding it to a
bogus number. That won't work because you cannot attach these uploaded
sounds to a text message.
I took out my little memory chip and put it into my PC and it had some
folders labeled. I moved my ring chime from my music folder to the
sound folder but it didn't appear. I assume it needs to be in the
non-standard "qcp" file format instead of the standard "wma" format the
audio files are in (the MP3s are apparently convered to that format on
upload)
So if I manage to find some qcp files could I stick them in that folder
and use them as ringtones? Or am I stuck with the lousy tones built
into the phone since I refuse to run to the bank for a loan to pay off
the fees to get a ringtone that just sounds like a damn phone.

| Have you tried sending a file from your pc of roughly 300k or less, give
or take to yourself at "yournumber@vzwpix.com"? Once you receive it
simply choose to save it as a ringtone which upon saving converts it to
a .mid file, this works fine for me with my lg 8300 of course it also
allows mp3's as ringtones.

| Does your phone have the capabilities to record messages or voice memos?
THis is what they mean by attaching a "sound" to a text message, not your
MP3s, as that is not possible. So you can record a part of a song as a
voice memo, and attach it to a text message. Then send this to a friend,
and have them send it back to you. Also, another samsung I have used
recently allowed you to just attach a sound after recording it. Mess around
with the voice recorder a little bit, I think you'll find what your looking
for.
Unless of course your phone doesn't have this capability.

| Try www.bitpim.org, you'll need a data cable, but I was able to upload my
own ringtones from mp3's.
