V3M + MPT4 + BT dongle = I can edit contacts, but not tones/pics?

| I just got the RAZR V3M. My first instinct was to find out what data
cable I needed to upload ring tones and download my camera pics. I
totally forgot that it had BT until I got it...and I just happen to
have a USB Bluetooth dongle for my PC.
So I went and got Motorla PhoneTools Version 4.2.1a. After some
fussing, I finally got the phone and MPT to communicate via BT, but the
only features available are access to my phonebook and calendar!? The
MPT Multimedia Studio doesnt even show up as a choice. If I go into the
MPT program directory and try to manually run MMStudio, there no choice
to send anything to the handset. And Image Studio doesnt even start.
Now, I have Verizon...and I heard they caused a ruckus by putting some
software on the V3C's so that MPT wont work (so you have to use their
damn Get it Now) but I didnt know if the V3M's had the same problem or
not. But the fact that I can access my phonebook and calendar seems to
me evidence that I'm not running into this Verizon issue. I would think
I should be able to access my pictures and ringers just as easy.
So where do I go from here? Different software? Even though I have a BT
connection working, do I have to go drop $30 on the Music Essential
Kit? Would that still even get me access to my pics? Thanks for any
info in advance.

| I am brand new to Verizon, so please excuse any redundant questions.
Briefly, I just got the Razr V3m. I still have Motorola Phone Tools 4.0.4b
from my GSM Razr V3. The program does not recognize the V3m at all. I'd like
to transfer my Outlook contacts and maybe some Pix and Tones. Any fix for
getting MPT to recognize the phone (modem settings, etc.) Any step-by-step
help for a tech challenged person gratefull accepted.
P.S. The Razr V3m is not on the list of Motoral CDMA devices the program
lists -- only V3c and V3cm. Neither of those settings connected to my phone.
I am using a USB cable.
TIA

Verizon deactivated the phones built-in ability to use Blue Tooth OBEX
and to use MMS in MPT. This prevents the transfer of pictures and
ring tones between the phone and a PC. There are hacks and firmware
flashes for the V3c that can restore these functions to the phone.
There are plenty of step by step instructions on how to do it at
Howards Forum. I am not sure if the same things will work with the
new V3m, but you could go there and check it out.

| On order to recognize the V3M you will have to perform a software update.
This update will make the V3M usable.
Hope this helps;

Verizon has deliberately crippled Multimedia Studio, forcing
users to jump through hoops with generic software or pay airtime
fees. But you CAN force Multimedia Studio to show up as a button
in the right pane of MPT by using the General Setup + Change
Modem, and manually setting the phone to your specific model
when it asks you to install drivers. It gets you maddeningly
close and there ought to be a final hack somewhere.
I have had success moving pictures and sounds TO my phone (v276)
using a Qualcomm program called "BREW Apploader" (downloadable).
I had to set the phone to COM4 and you may need to reset any
modem-type changes made with MPT first. BREW...tends to crash
and recently won't open the /shared/audio/ folder without
freezing. But it works well for deleting preinstalled photos and
sound clips. Those deleted files may appear as corrupt on the
phone until you restart it.
Another promising app is BitPim, but it apparently favors a
serial cable over a USB cable. I can get it to recognize my
phone as a USB Modem in great detail, but it fails to actually
connect via the USB cable. Some people have had success using
BitPim's "Other CDMA phone" setting. A serial cable may be
useful here.
You can make a ringtone using the low quality QCP format. You
have to convert a WAV, MP3, WMA, etc. to QCP, then rename it
with a *.mid extension before emailing it to
yournumber@vzwpix.com. Otherwise it can't be applied as a
ringtone (at least on my v276). I have tried renaming MP3s to
*.mid with no luck. I kept them small at 32kbps/22khz mono, 30
seconds. If QCP sounded better than its "full VBR 14000 bps max"
this would be a good trick. QCP seems made for low quality
speech at best.
I stumbled on the QCP method in various forums and there's got
to be a cleaner format for ringtones. AAC works on various
phones and I'll be testing that soon.

I forgot to mention that Motorola PST (Product Service Tool) is
said to cover all the bases. They say it's downloadable on
temporary links if you time it right. I don't think anyone's
supposed to use it except cellular company employees.
The moral to this story is that there's no free lunch. They want
you to pay for ringtones and graphics, and business-wise it's
hard to blame them. But it's hard to find paid music that seems
ideal for a phone ringer. Customizing your own shouldn't be
restricted.
