New rules for voicemail

| Last week my voicemail was "updated" according to Verizon customer
service.
I've had Verizon cell service for about 2 1/2 years, and although I
always just had "basic" voicemail, for some reason I could save up to
40 voicemails ... for 21 days ... and each time you'd "re-save" them,
you'd get another 21 days. So ... basically you could save a voicemail
forever, if you were so inclined.
Anyway, literally from one day to the next my voicemail changed - last
week, Wednesday, to be exact. I had about 35 saved voicemails, and
suddenly I was getting the message "your mailbox is full" even though I
could always save up to 40 before. So I called Customer Service - they
told me that with basic voicemail I could only save 21 - they had no
explanation for the overnight change, but said they "updated" voicemail
.... last year!
Anyway, I deleted voicemails - now down to less than 15 - but now when
I save them, I get different time periods for almost every voicemail
(some now for 3 days, some for 13, some for 16) when I try to "resave"
them.
Now, NEW voicemails can be saved for 21 days, but then cannot be
"resaved."
I called Customer Service today because I just wanted to understand
what happened. They said that they can't tell me WHEN I was "updated,"
just that I was - I said, "obviously, last Wednesday!" They said they
can't tell when "because it's a backdoor thing." Anyway, they said
their server can't handle all the voicemail being saved indefinitely,
so they are changing it so that you might be able to "resave" only
once, if at all, then the messages are deleted.
It's not a big problem really - the ones I want, I transferred to
audiotape or my computer - but some NOTICE would have been nice!
Anyway, just FYI ... it just happened out of the blue ...

One wonders-- for Pete's sakes, why would a person need to save a voice
mail for weeks on end-- much less save 35-40 or them?
I guess maybe if it was a friend or loved one that died after leaving it,
but otherwise?????

Strange...I just checked the system here in Florida & I can still extend my
saved voicemails for an additional 21 days.

I'm in New Jersey ... the Customer Service rep said they're just
plugging along doing this until they get everyone "through the
backdoor," whatever that means. It's not earth shattering, but it does
make me wonder what other changes might occur "through the backdoor"
without notice ...
