I've had 2 8300s for about a month.
Pros: Nice sounding speakers for WMA files/music.
Long stand-by time.
Cons: Annoying sibilance in earpiece when I speak (sizzling sound when
saying words with "s" in them).
Screens wash out to being invisible in bright sunlight.
I miss my simpler, monochrome Samsung A310. It was trimode, sounded
better, was smaller than the 8300, but no bells and whistles.

Are the batteries compatible with earlier LGs, e.g. the VX7000? Whether I take
advantage of the "new every 2" may come down to whether I have to buy a new
charger and spare battery.

No. Unlike the 7000, 4400, and other models, the battery isn't part of
the back cover anymore -- it's UNDER the back cover. So older batteries
are totally incompatible.
The charging plug is also different, which just irritates the hell out
of me. It's very similar to the 7000's, but not identical; the
accessories don't fit it. Fortunately, I didn't need to replace the
data cable, because Bluetooth will let me move ringtones and pictures
using BitPim.
As for car charging, I gave up on getting chargers for all my toys long
ago; I have a 12VDC->110VAC inverter I keep in the car, so I can use the
included chargers with everything. A much better bargain than getting
all those lighter adapters.
Overall, I'm thrilled with the 8300; a much better phone in every
respect than the 7000 it replaced. Aside from not being a tri-mode,
it's as good a phone as my 4400 was, as far as signal retention and
sound quality.

I got one a week or two ago... I've got no complaints so far. If you visit
my site, url below, you can see some example pix and vids in my blog from a
couple days ago. It is an upgrade from my old VX6100, which I loved -
sticking with LG seemed right for me.
