Taking vacation, is my verizon useless over there?

Europe uses GSM, not CDMA. Ask your hotel about renting you a loaner phone
that works, if you just gotta have it.

Forward your calls to the loaner phone, which, I'm sure, Verizon is gonna
really get even for on your next bill.

Oh, by the way, the BEST phone to use in Europe is a SKYPE phone on your
laptop. If everyone back home gets on Skype, you can talk for hours for
FREE, otherwise it's gonna cost you Euro0.017/minute to call 'em from any
place on the planet that has internet service, like your hotel has in
Europe. No monthly fees, no funny business...Skype.com

Don't forget to take your headset with the boom mic for the laptop...(c;

Skype, without the color video from your webcam, only needs 10Kbps of
internet bandwidth to make great calls from. Broadband, of course, gives
you live color video...

tote of the laptop. :)

The best thing to do is the following (even if you had a U.S. GSM
carrier this would be the best):

1. Get an unlocked dual band (900/1800) GSM phone, or an unlocked quad
band phone, or one of the older tri- band phones that is 900/1800/1900
(do not get a tri-band that is 850/1800/1900). Something like
"http://welectronics.com/gsm/motorolat280.html" When you get to each
country, purchase a prepaid SIM card.

2. Sign up for VoiceStick (voicestick.com). Get the free service where
you pay by the minute. Give out your Voicestick number in the U.S..
Forward your voicestick number to your prepaid account (you'll need find
a computer to use somewhere, in order to change the forwarding number).

Yep.

Pick up an unlocked tri- or quad-band GSM phone. You can find them on eBay
from around $50 on up. When you get to Europe, buy a SIM card. They're not
very expensive. You'll get a phone number and a pre-loaded number of
minutes. You can recharge the SIM if you exceed your minutes, or simply buy
another one. No subscription or committment is necessary.

I keep a couple of GSM phones around for when we travel out of the U.S.
It's very convenient to have the cellphones -- we can call each other when
my wife is off shopping and I'm doing something else, call the hotel for
directions, call restaurants to make reservations, call for taxis, etc. The
per-minute charges will be substantially below what the hotel will charge
for local calls.

By the way, Skype, unlike cellular, is an EXCELLENT way of sending the
videos and digital photos to the friends' Skypes back home.

No extra charge, of course, being free....

People with jobs that entail significant responsibility?

Why would you even care?

Seeing you did reply, I would say you care. I don't. When I'm on
vacation I don't tote a laptop around. Things get and got done before
Email correct ? If you have a job with "Significant responsibility" Then
I'm sure others can handle it while your away. If not, what's going to
happen when you quit or get fired etc, etc ?

I like my job. But I'm not married to it.

The OP asked for information about phones in Europe, not personal advice.

How nice for you.

If that's the kind of job that you have. Do you think everyone has the same
kind of job? Do you think you set the benchmark for how to handle a career?

All the more reason my employer should keep me happy, right?

Again, good for you. Perhaps, if someone posts a question in
ec.ilovemyjob.butimnotmarried.toit, your input will be welcomed. This is
alt.cellular.verizon.

Incidently, a public post to a newsgroup is not an invitation to receive
personal email.

I would spend more time telling someone about the company web site you
work for. :}

In defence of those of us who carry around laptops, one of the coolest
things I like to do with it is use Google Earth to locate my sleeping hovel
(some call them hotels) then whatever I think I want to see, today.
Looking down from space and flying over the vacation spot, I usually spot
many other things I'd never see from the ground of great interest between A
and B. Dump the Google picture and map to the little printer, along with
interesting webpages from the net of other places to see and I'm ready to
set out to see the sights, visit "Madame's Bar and Brothel" Google found on
21st Street for a little refreshment and the Cathedral of Perpetual
Donations And Sin Forgiveness, Pastor Don presiding, with the big carillon
in the tower.

"No, Monticello Avenue is a big 4-lane street. See here in the Google
picture?"......PRICELESS.

Our housesitter called on Skype from our den to let us know everything's
fine. I may stay another week!

That's not the company I work for -- that's my hobby. If you want to know
who I work for and what I do, google my email address and the word "esq."

Is sticking your foot down your mouth a chronic problem for you?

I'll spell it out:

Don't send me private email copies of your public posts. It's rude and
unnecessary.

You did it twice. Apparently, you don't know how to use your email program.

As I said, you seem to have a particular knack for shoving your foot down
your throat.

I too found that the http://www.voicestick.com is the way to go. I got a
$25 unlimited GLOBAL plan and Ihad a ton of calls forwarded to me in Europe
with out any extra cost.

Even the per minute plan was cheap with many places UNDER 1 cent a minute
forwarded to me.
