I don't think so. The two mobile operators which currently provide
service there are 900/1800 MHz GSM.

Nope, but Barbados does have internet service either Ethernet or Wifi in
the hotels for you to use.......so.......(c; Unfortunately, Skype
doesn't have one of its cheap hotspots in Barbados, now called "Skype
Zones", where Skype has made a deal for its users to use hotspots you
have to pay for, without charge for Skype customers to use Skype. This
service is $7.95/month and is something new for Skype. There's already
20,000 paid hotspots online, 2800+ in the USA. UPS Stores are all Skype
Zone hotspots, now. Bahamas has one hotel, Aruba has 8, more are signing
up every month as deals are made.
Download Skype for free from www.skype.com and install it on your laptop
and all the people's computers back home you want to talk to....
At your hotel, connect up to the hotel's wifi any way you can....or to
some cyber cafe they love in small countries.
SKYPE 'EM FOR FREE!....anywhere on the planet the internet goes....(c;
There, I said it....and probably am gonna pay for it, dearly...hee hee.
There's another Skype trick which will cost you $28/YEAR.....Skype
In...at home. Sign up for a Skype In phone number before you leave for
Barbados, there's one in every major US city or one close to where you
live. Tell your friends to call that number while you're gone, instead
of trying to cellphone you across the incompatible, overpriced monsters
cellular companies have become. In Barbados, just boot your computer
online and boot Skype. (I like the Linksys CIT200 wireless Skype phone
plugged into the USB port on my laptop, myself. It's base station has
about a 300' range out on the beach by the hotel patio bar. It'll go way
out on the beach if you get a room on the beach side and put the CIT200
base unit on the 10th floor balcony! There, now THEY can call YOU for
FREE from any phone back home, just dialing your Skype In phone number.
YOU will be paying nothing to take these calls until January, 2007, when
the price goes way up to 2.1c/minute.
Calls from your Skype to any Barbados telephone, even from Barbados, is
$US0.20/min deducted from your precharged Skype Out account (no monthly
charges, just usage). Still MUCH cheaper than a Barbados rental
cellphone I bet! I've never been overseas on Skype, yet, but they MAY
charge you 20c/min to call your Skype in Barbados from your Skype In in
the USA. I think that's the way it's supposed to work. Even then, find
a 20c/min phone in Barbados to the states where the other folks can call
you for free....
Skype is cheap...Skype In, your own number, is $28/YEAR!.....
If you just need to call the office or home from Barbados, use Skype-to-
Skype, which is always FREE, computer to computer and forget all the rest
of the stuff. Just set up a time schedule when both ends will be online
and available to accept calls between you. The hotel may charge you
internet access fees down there.....but that's cheap compared to
international cellular phone dialing charges!
Of course, we'll expect bottles of some great rums upon your return. Our
Customs Service spies will notify us how many bottles they found in your
luggage for us....(c; You won't be allowed back in unless you bring us
some....

It's a vacation,
So maybe i'll follow the advice of SWMBO and leave the cells etc. home.

Well, as great as Skype is, it's not very useful when you're stuck in
a ditch out in the sticks. It's a good program but it's not perfect
either. Dial-up users mileage will vary. The most noticable effect
will be lag. You cut in and out so the person on the other end hears
every other word, and if the lag's bad enough, the call will drop. I
mean don't get me wrong, it's a good service, I have hardcore gaming
friends that use it. They like it. I don't ever call people long
distance. Everyone I need to talk to is a local call or on the IM or
through e-mail. IM's have voice chat as well, so if you're both on MSN
or Yahoo or AIM, you don't even need Skype. Ventrilo's another good
program for voice chat. My guild uses it in GuildWars. The only
drawback is it requires someone settng up a Vent server, which isn't
free, free to use though.

Skype doesn't work on dialup. They don't even recommend trying it, but
it does work on a VZW aircard if they don't catch you. The lag on Skype
on broadband is too small to bother you. Skype is also full duplex, so
there's no "cutting out". As I said, no dialups.
As to the use in the sticks, I'd bet, in Barbados, the toyphones will be
as dead as a doornail from that ditch. Hell, they don't even work in
rural America, to say nothing of little 3rd world countries. I think
you're dreaming if you want to depend on them out in the jungle.
Noone "needs Skype". If stupid typing messaging is your bag, have at it.
But, no thanks for me. I'm a big boy now and have moved on from typing
except on usenet. I'm sorry you don't have broadband where you are. I'd
get off the net if I had to go back. It's just too frustrating to use,
these days, with all these bandwidth-hoggin' things.

I don't get how "full duplex" means no "cutting out". On my computer
Skype sends datagrams at about 70 kbps in each direction. This means
little or no compression, which does indeed minimize lags if you have
sufficient bandwidth. If you have less than 70 kbps available in one
of the directions, however, then queuing (i.e. lags) and dropped packets
(i.e. cuttting out) are certain. "every other word" is likely an accurate
description of what happens over the 33.6 kbps uplink of a dialup. Even
with ADSL, 70 kbps can overwhelm a 128 or even 256 kbps shared uplink
serving an Internet cafe or a hotel, so trying to use it there can be
antisocial behaviour (though I use it when I can, anyway).

I'll take that bet. Barbados, with a quarter million people and an
island that is likely under 20 miles from one end to the other,
has a population density more than 10 times the US average. It is also
one of the richest countries in the Caribbean. I've not been anywhere
there with coverage as bad as my suburban SF Bay area house, let alone
no coverage at all, the only problem for the original poster is that it
is GSM coverage rather than CDMA.

Quite possibly. Depends on how far away a tower is. You have a better
chance of coming in range of a celltower than you do a wi-fi hotspot
from that ditch, however.

Well, no. They have voice and video messaging now. As to the quality,
the only one I've really used was Messenger's and it was alright. I've
probably tried the other two a couple of times and I remember the
experience being similar. It works well enough.

With Skype you can only talk to one of the other three people who have
it so it really doesn't matter how many wifi places there are in
Barbados.

That's odd. I'm showing 7,292,857 online at 11:39AM EDT as I type this.
However, he doesn't want to talk to all three of them, he just wants to
talk to his friends and office back home without paying $3/minute to do
so.
Can you blame him?
Noone cares if YOU don't like it, or anyone who doesn't like it. From
the "shack in back of Walmart with the 36 cats", as your assflame to me
in another thead points out, it works great, here.
For someone who needs to call back home to check on a business and how
the house sitter is getting along, or not getting along, Skype from a
Barbados hotspot is a great, very cheap way to accomplish that in a
timely manner. Use a mic on the computer and the laptop's speakers and
the whole family in Barbados can listen into the conference with as many
phones and Skype computers you'd care to put into a large conference call
I'm sure would be VERY expensive on any cellular carrier or hotel
telephone system.
Now, be a good boy and crawl back into that box with the cats...(c;
