Author Anybody got MiniOpera on their phones?
Larry

2007-11-12, 10:33 pm

I downloaded a new Opera 9 version browser, tonight, and got
looking at MiniOpera, a server-based conversion browser for the
tiny phone screens.

Anyone tried it? What do you think?

http://www.operamini.com/

Pretty neat the way Opera's server takes any webpage and makes it
fit the little phone screen. There's a realtime working demo on:
http://www.operamini.com/demo
Try it with your favorite webpages

Sure beats the hell out of WapCrap on my MotoROKR Z9M....and no
rental fees on Opera Mini every month!

smartphones/pda phones which you have to pay 2x as much a month for)

Not true. I'm on Alltel and they won't let me load miniopera into
my new MotoROKR Z6M, either.

One TS said it would void my warranty. I'd love to test that in

It's not surprising that Larry the troll would post in this group, the
only surprise is that someone here hasn't killfiled him yet...

They might tell you that you are not allowed to, but that doesn't mean
that you cannot!

(Also, on the OperaMini website, it says that Verizon Wireless is the
only mobile provider that doesn't support Opera other than the Blackberry)

Actually, I use it on my Blackberry. And I'm a Verizon customer.

Thanks ok.

I only hope that verizon allows Opera to make OperaMini for
non-pda/smartphone phones.

Opera doesn't have to make a new version for Verizon phones, Verizon just
has to stop disabling Java support in the phones they offer. OperaMini
can run on RAZRs, KRZRs, etc., just not on the VZW versions. The reason
it works on the high-end PDAs is that Verizon hasn't crippled them as much.

No, its because Verizon has locked down the BREW on cell phones. Since
verizon PDAs/Smartphones don't run the interface verizon puts on their
other phones (and therefor are not locked to Verizon-locked BREW)

There is OperaMini for BREW already, but verizon will not let Opera
create OperaMini for their nonPDA/Smartphone phones (which have BREW
locked down)

Actually, if you're looking to put one on your smartphones, they do have
one available for that.. and if you have data plan.. then it shouldn't be
that bad. there are some thirty party program that will work fine on
smartphones, and speed is fast.

Generally I'm a GSM snob, but I recently added an ancient Samsung i600
(WinMo Smartphone) to my repertoire using PagePlus (a prepaid Verizon
reseller) for when I'm up in the mountains here in Colorado. I used to
use an AT&T TDMA prepaid as my rural backup (I was a Cingular dealer a
few years ago, and had a basket of leftover TDMA phones I could activate,
use up the minutes, chuck it when it expired and activate another) but
needed to go CDMA when AT&T killed off TDMA.

PagePlus has free QNC data right now (via a loophole Verizon will likely
close soon.) Unfortunately the i600 seems to have neither Java nor BREW
support, so I'm SOL on OperaMini unless I can find a JVM for WinMo 2003.

> there are some thirty party program that will work fine on

Not on QNC it isn't! ;-) I could buy Opera Mobile, but considering
Verizon could end the free data party any minute, I'll limp along with
the included Pocket IE browser. I've already bought Opera Mobile for my
"real" WinMo PPC phone on T-Mo.

PagePlus will activate any old thrift store Verizon phone, but I figured
I'd activate a WinMo smartphone so I could easily sync my contacts and
calendar from my other WinMo phones to it, and some guy on eBay is
dumping used i600s with new batteries for $25 including shipping. That's
the least amount of money I've every spent on a WinMo device so I
couldn't resist!

Interesting- I didn't know they had a BREW version. I suppose unlocking
BREW isn't something one can do with a SEEM edit or a firmware flash?

Sure you can, check Howard Forums for the sections on your specific
phone.

Nope, only moto phones have SEEM edits, and non of them unlock brew on
verizon phones (only way to is to flash the phone with firmware from
Alltel or Sprint, or any other CDMA carrier.)

Or generic Motorola which is the flash I use. It's nothing to do with
unlocking anything, it HAS to be done anyway and within 3 days of
receiving the phone or the horrible red Verizon UI will irritate you so
much you'll throw the phone on the ground and stomp it.

I was within an inch of putting the V3m on Ebay and reactivating my
E815, could not tolerate opening the flip and seeing that godawful red
one more time!

BTW, your response was a bit odd, Todd asked, "I suppose unlocking
BREW isn't something one can do with a SEEM edit or a firmware flash?"

The answer to his question is, YES.

To be fair, I was asking generically, and further up the thread I'd
mentioned I bought an old Samsung i600 WinMo phone on eBay, so his
response actually did make sense if he assumed I was going to try to it
on the i600- I do know SEEM edits are a Motorola thing, but I certainly
didn't make that clear in my post. I was just trying to gauge the
difficulty of enabling Java on the "average" Verizon phone.

That's funny you mentioned that- although the Samsung, as a WinMo phone,
doesn't have the Verizon UI, the first thing I did after getting it two
weeks ago (after charging the battery) was to change the god-awful
red/black menu color scheme it defaulted to! How do Verizon users stand
it? I thought T-Mo was bad with the pink (sorry, "magenta,") and gray,
but the red and black is truly stick-a-fork-in-your-eye irritating!

Let us not forget Red and Black (and green) are the colors of
Verizon's target market Black Americans. The predominant colors
of the African American Flag, a bastardization of the national
flag, is red and black.

It depends on who your target market is what your webpage looks
like. Have none of you notice the predominance of black faces in
Verizon marketing, those slickly-dressed black yuppies in the
fancy cars?

The red and black of the various Black Power flags is also a
"stick-a-fork-in-your-eye" irritation, as it was designed to be.

Amazing, isn't it!

I feel the same way- you can have 8 or 9 worthwhile reasonable
conversations with the guy, then suddenly something crazy (or bigoted)
comes in out of left field.

He's a perplexing fellow...
