A breakfast this morning a friend was showing off his new ipod, which had a
big touch screen, wi-fi access, browser, and all the spiffy stuff I think
the iphone does, EXCEPT it is not a phone. He uses a verizon phone for
that.

Yes it is the iTouch and I have been using one for two months. I think
it is neater than an iPhone because it is thinner, lighter, and slips
into your pocket like a credit card case or a couple of 3x5 index
cards.

But I am thinking of buying an iPhone now that I comprehend all the
neat stuff you can do with mobile OS X on a handheld device. You can
run an apache server off an iPhone or iTouch!

Browsing the web is near painless compared to the Mobile Web crap on
many cell phones like my envy and much better than Windows Mobile Web
browsers that I have had. I will never accept a screen smaller than
Apple's touch screen as it is just right for a small screen. The only
way to go would be a similar screen in a slightly larger size like
4.3" which could still easily drop into your pocket.

That's because your friend wants a phone that has a network that actually
works. As opposed to a toy that is utterly useless when it can't find the
substandard ATT network. :-)

some day, if Verizon does every right... Apple will allow them to sell
the iPhone... then all the jealous Verizon users will shout with glee.

someday it will happen!

I thought that they also left Bluetooth off the iPod Touch.

The only reason to have an iPhone in the U.S., if you care about
coverage with your cell phone, is to get it unlocked so you can use it
with a prepaid SIM card when traveling outside North America.

Use Verizon in the U.S. as the network is so much better than the AT&T
network.

Then why does AT&T have any customers? And they have many, more than
Verizon. For some Verizon is better. It is better for me in my area.
That is why I have had Verizon. But for some AT&T is better or the
same in the U.S. Every network has holes in their coverage. AT&T has
lots of customers for whom the AT&T coverage is fine.

there is very little quantitative difference between the two. i've used
both and it's the essentially the same. at&t is better for customer
support, website for payment is better, but verizon has a slightly
better coverage area if you live on the fringes of life.

Too limited....only a couple of hobbled functions....

Bluetooth the phone to:
http://www.nseries.com/n800

MUCH more versatile! 800 pixel screen, Opera or the newer
Foxfire real browser with Flash9, Realmedia support, Javascript
on REAL webpages, not some converted crap.

N800 is a phone, too....Google Talk with webcam built into it,
Skype for N800 fully supported for world communications cheaply,
VoIP support for others.....WITHOUT being controlled by a damned
SELLphone carrier screwing with your OS and functions trying to
resell them back to you monthly.

Hmm...Breakfast. We were at Awfulhouse loading up on colesterol
and fat. After the tablet played us BBC World News, I called my
Orb (corp.orb.com) server at home and had it playing Looney Tunes
and Bugs Bunny cartoons for the enthralled kids off the terabyte
drive stack over my Alltel EVDO UNLIMITED broadband...(c;

Sorry, iPhone/iPods won't play Orb's video like N800/810s do...
....by design, me thinks....especially over Verizon's shitty
excuse for limited internet email and webspam...over double the
price.

And verizon's phones have 3g, ATT phones such as the iphail have 2-2.5G

They do actually. I pay $80 a month for 450 minutes and unlimited IN
calling, unlimited data, unlimited texts, and tethering via EVDO and 1x.

OMG!! Please....... Now comes the inevitable Larry cut and paste of VZW's
TOS and the related screed - for the umpteen hundredth time...

Maybe my mere mention will prevent it - this time? One can hope.

In what areas? If you travel, and actually move around in cities and
suburbs you'll find QUITE a significant improvement with verizon over
cingular/att.

Now, now, Jon- for ONCE our friend Oxford made a Completely legimate post
in alt.cellular.verizon, abd youhave to goad him into defending the iPhone.

For the record, AT&T sells plenty of 3G phones. In fact, I think all of
their $199 and up phones are 3G with one exception... ;-)
