but Seattle is known as the Detroit of computing, so no wonder they
can't make anything work.

In other words, they can't make money by providing cheap WiFi for
everyone in a city.
Come on, it's a utility, fer chrissakes. A city should find the most
economical way to provide that, which means sometimes operating at zero
profit, or reinvesting any operating surplus... There's not going to be
any immediate benefit to anyone except the hardware suppliers and
everyone who lives, works, and visits the city.

We have municipal Wi-Fi here in my city, and I must admit that although I
cannot get a signal here in my house (without purchasing a "booster"
transmitter) I do use it in the park and at cafes downtown, etc. It works
well and is a good "model" for municipal Wi-Fi setups everywhere.

The only reason that the air we breath is free, is because the corporate
world has been unable to figure out a practical way to meter it.

Have you ever heard anything about setup costs, and how good the
maintenance costs are?
Anything about how long they can keep it up?
Anything about how they keep running?

You have to buy an indoor "repeater" fro about US$150-$200. There is no setup
cost, there are no maintenance costs. It's free for everybody.

As long as they want. After all, Google paid for it
> Anything about how they keep running?
Google is rich. That's how they keep it running.

When talking about municipal WiFi, we have to include the cost of
municipal overhead and maintenance -- which is certainly not zero.
As to the rest, if Google is paying for it, and Google decides when and
where it is applied or retained, then it isn't free WiFi-- it's
_gifted_ WiFi. it could stop anytime, because it isn't being operated
at very low cost, it's just being operated by someone else.
