GPS Tracking on Sprint and Verizon
|
|
|
| I'm not sure whether it's good or bad, but one technology that the CDMA
carriers have that the U.S. GSM carriers don't, is GPS tracking
information, that is available to the subscriber.
My wife's company recently dumped Nextel, partly for coverage reasons,
but partly because they want to be able to track the location of field
service personnel.
Cingular and T-Mobile use a much less accurate positioning system,
called TDOA, so these carriers were not considered. Also, some of the
field people go to rural areas of eight Bay Area counties, and they need
AMPS coverage (even though the GPS won't work in those areas). So the
choice came down to Sprint or Verizon, and Verizon had better handset
selection of handsets with AMPS so they went with Verizon. AMPS is NOT
going to be turned off in 2008 in areas with no digital coverage.
In Europe, some GSM carriers are installing GPS tracking, but the U.S.
GSM carriers don't want to spend the money.

Can a subscriber track another's position?

There are some kid-specific phones that allow parents to track them.
I'm sure that this is a somewhat restricted service, though.

Verizon is selling them a package which includes this capability. But
no, other than Disney Mobile, I don't think that this is available to
subscribers.
