Nowadays, you have to be very wary of going to a website that's a
'prank'. The bastards are making websites that do driveby virus
installation. Your PC ends up becoming another bot on a botnet. Or
worse, it installs a key logger and your identity gets stolen, along
with your bank account.

Melvin's identity has been stolen 3 times in 2006. Melvin is Melvin
Schultz, my computer alter ego. Melvin has a fake bank account, fake
passport number, fake telephone number (the local computer fraud cops),
fake SSN and 3 fake credit cards with very high limits.

When you get a new computer, register it in your Melvin's name with Micro
$not. Melvin gets a lot of offers all the time from all over to his gmail
email account...(c;

windows users, apparently, feel inferior and that want mac users to
come down to their level.

i use both a mac powerbook and a powerful vista notebook. they are
both functional. the windows machine needs aggressive anti-viris,
worm, etc. protection. the mac does not.

Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant for Sophos, said: "Some
owners of Mac computers have held the belief that Mac OS X is
incapable of harbouring computer viruses, but Leap-A will leave them
shell-shocked, as it shows that the malware threat on Mac OS X is
real.

“Apple Mac users need to be just as careful running unknown or

Couple of things to consider folks:
1. The past is no guarantee of the future.
2. There was a time (and I'm old enough to remember it) when PCs didn't
get viri either.
3. Humility is an honorable trait....keeps you out of trouble.
<smile>

As for the Mac's track record, no argument as I have never owned one.
Worked on one at work once (IIe no less!) and it was a nightmare! Two
versions of Basic, flaky hardware and SLOW as smoke even then.... See, I
told you I was old enough.

May you always be free of viri....but if it's true, I'm betting it won't
last.

Which is a testament to the Mac's lack of popularity...
Why would virus writers waste time on the 5% who have a Mac,
when they can get a much bigger result by targeting the 90%
who have a PC.

Is this one of those my OS Is better then your's ?

I can tell you why there are more viruses for the PC then the mac.
It's because the writers of these don't bother with the mac. Reason:
It's like there is not much software for the mac. Why write software for
a dead machine. Why did apple go with the Intel chip ? They used the
Power PC Chip from day one. There about to go under, So they Install the
Intel chips to save there butt from going under. Now you can Install
windows on a mac and why? All the cool software made today runs under
windows. Who remembers that apple took money from Microsoft to keep
from going under ? The only reason Microsoft loaned them this was to
prevent a monopoly.

Software writers say, I can write software for the mac and maybe make a
little cash. Or I can write for windows and retire.

And If the mac os is so safe when it comes to viruses, Then why is it
there is virus software made for the mac os ? The list goes on and on.

Not sure what you meant by "day one," but Macs didn't use PowerPC CPUs
for nearly a decade after (the Mac's) release. The Mac used a Motorola
68k on day one. If you meant day-one of the PPC's release, no kidding
(Apple was part of the alliance, I certainly would have expected them to
use the CPU ASAP).

That said, now that Macs run x86 CPUs I do find it amusing that nearly
all of my Mac friends seem to enjoy running Windows (Parallels, etc.)
more than anything else (or they speak about it a lot). They often
continue to trash MS, even though they have purchased not only Windows,
but extra software just to run it. Kinda hypocritical. <g>

Talk about prank! The fallacy that Macs are immune from viruses and
exploits is so much bull-hocky. Macs (and OS-X) are absolutely no more
impervious to these attacks than are PCs; it is simply that almost all the
exploits are against the PC, which account for 96% of all computers sold.
If Macs were 97% of the computers sold, it would be Macs being attacked and
PC users saying "get a PC". I love the look on the face of a Mac owner that
has brought his/her machine in for a problem, and we tell them it was
infected...they actually believe that their machines are "impervious". This
false sense of security is laugable, and dangerous.

Lets see...for every 100 computers sold, 96 are PCs, 2 are Macs and 2 are
based on other technology. So I would use that as a basis. Macs *ARE NOT*
impervious to viruses.

I have nothing againt Macs...I use both PCs and Macs. But the arrogance of
some Mac owners is ludicrous. Macs are far from perfect, are not immune to
exploits and viruses, and there sure as heck a lot less dsfotware available
for Macs!

That you *KNOW* of. If you are not runnign any AV, and the virus does not
manifest itself in an obvious way, you would not know it.

You cannot claim that you have never had a virus. You have no way of
proving that, because your arrogant posts indicate that you don't run any
antivirus scanners.

Macs are certainly NOT immune. However, there are a number of
features of Windows that certainly don't help the situation. One
of them is being able to double-click on executable code that came
from an outside source (email, web site, USENET) and RUN it without
even having to save it as a disk file. Another is Windows hiding
file extensions so you can't tell the difference between a piece
of malware and an image.

Also, Windows usually gets set up (fixed in Vista, I think) with all
users having administrative privileges. That's not a good thing for
viruses being able to write on and infect system files (at least on
systems with more than one user, other users get infected when the first
one does. That's less likely if users can't write on each other's files.)

I do....They don't run the millions of freeware programs because Apple
tried to make them proprietary to boost profits. Yeah, I know...they have
an emulator. God that sucks.

I'm no fan of Micro$not or Uncle Bill, but you gotta give him credit for
making it a helluva great toy when he released the product to the hackers
to develop their own software.

It ran Apple into the MP3 business....(c;

I haven't seen anyone crying. Paranoid delusions? Projecting?

Was amused by your use of this though:
User-Agent: Microsoft-Entourage/11.1.0.040913

Too funny. Cry about MS and then turn right around and use their
products. Hypocrite.

He uses Office. I use it too, but only because I need to work with PC

Straw-man argument. Office formats have nothing to do with Usenet, and
there are plenty of alternatives, even for the Mac. And since you didn't
use Entourage to post your reply you already knew that.

I won't get into the "and can't" comment.

It's simple. You are not running any antivirus. Your computer could be
infected, and you would never know, *because you are not running any
antivirus software".

Most viruses do not announce themselves. Unless you have a way to detect
viruses, you cannot say with any certainty that there are no viruses on your
computer.

Irrelevent to the thread. The discussion is whether Macs are immune to
viruses or not. The thread is not about what you think makes PCs more
vulnerable.

So don't.

I need compatiblity with my Windows clients so I use Office. I also use
Entourage because many of my clients use the calendar function for
meetings, etc.

I'd love to wean my corporate clients off Office, I'm sure your
suggestions for alternatives would be very persuasive.

LOL. Please tell me what I'm missing. I run a $400K+ a year design

damn ActiveX web control panels (for which Virtual PC and now Parallels

Don't recall the model, pretty sure they were Power Macs. Connected to
an iCube/iMix video editing system. Constant crashes. Had to save every

That editing system is ancient history. Was using old Quadras too,
before PowerMacs. Things have come a long way since then. Final Cut pro
kinda changed things.

He's also talking about 10 year+ old equipment and pre-PowerMacs.
Have no idea how unstable the techs set up that studio. These days, it's
all bulletproof.

You have the option to not have the extensions hidden.

Every copy of XP I've used hasn't done this. There is the
option to set it up like this during installation, but only a moron
would grant *everyone* admin privileges.

Beta tape's ancient history too, so's 3/4" and 1" but they're still in

Maybe the iCube will come back like the 8 track.

Like all technology it's probably still in use in more places that
people think. I've got a friend who owns a print shop and they're still
using a 486 to run some older, but necessary, DOS based software. Just
because it's old don't mean it has to be thrown away.

Which one? There were so many to choose from...!

Our was so scavenged I don't even know what make it was. We only,
thankfully, had to use it a few times a year. Half the time the take-up
reel'd shit the tape off when you weren't looking (roll tape, run for a
smoke!) and you'd end up with a floor full of tape. Got so bad we'd pull
out a garbage can and leave it next to the machine if we were going to
use it. The 3/4 machine wasn't much better, the MC console couldn't
control it so you had to scoot half way across the room to hit play on
the deck.

If you insist on getting cute with Latin words, you should at least do it in
the right case. The accusative plural of "virus" (assuming it's a
2nd-declension masculine noun) is "viros".

But since this use of "get" is idiomatic in English, you may be safer using
ablative instead (as in "infected by means of a virus"). That would be
"viris".

The genitive plural would be "virorum". But the more Latin-sounding "free from
viruses" would again use ablative (e.g., "liber a viris").

Since you're old enough to remember the good old days, you may have taken
Latin in high school too. ;^)

> The word virus has no classically attested plural form in Latin. In antiquity the word had not yet acquired its current meaning. It denoted something like toxicity; venom; a poisonous, deleterious, or unpleasant agent or principle; or poison in the abst

ract or general sense[2]. Since virus in antiquity denoted something noncountable, it was a mass noun. Mass nouns, such as air, valor, and helpfulness in English, pluralize only under special circumstances, hence the nonexistence of plural forms.& #91;3]
>
> Further, it is unclear how a plural might have been formed under Latin grammar if the word had acquired a meaning requiring a plural form. In Latin virus is generally regarded to be a neuter of the second declension, but neuter second declension nouns e

nding in -us (rather than -um) are so rare that there are no recorded plurals. Possibilities include vira (by analogy with 2nd declension neuters in -um such as bellum) and virus with a long u (by analogy with 4th declension masculine such as status, alth
ough as a neuter noun the plural of virus in the 4th declension would be virua). However, none of these is attested[4].
>
> The form virii would not have been a correct plural, since the ending -ii only occurs in the plural of words ending in -ius. For instance, take radius, plural radii: the root is radi-, with the singular ending -us and the plural -i. Thus the plural viri

i is that of the nonexistent word virius. The form viri might also be incorrect in Latin. The ending -i is normally used for masculine nouns, not neuter ones such as virus, although there are exceptions such as humus -"soil" which is feminine and vulgus -
"crowd" which is neuter; moreover, viri (albeit with a short i in the first syllable) is the plural of vir, and means "men."
