-->Verizon just sent me a letter that they will be discontinuing service on
Feb 18th 2008.

"Dear Valued Customer:

Re: Digital Network Conversion

The last day Verizon Wireless will provide analog cellular service will be
February 18, 2008. This change will allow Verizon Wireless to fully
transition to it's all-digital wireless network, and to offer improved voice
and data services to our customers.
blah blah blah..... "

In the letter, they say that if I don't switch by the deadline time, that
the phone number mentioned in the letter, will just be disconnected and will
no longer be charged for that number.

Anyway just FYI.....

Sure glad Alltel hasn't followed this stupidity, yet....

I guess Verizon will quit working in the country after February. There's
only AMPS service away from the interstates.

Maybe they'll erect a grid of CDMA towers across the landscape 4 miles
apart to make the toyphones work....yeah, sure.......

NOT!

-->Could just be one of those disclaimer letters as well. Pretty much are
saying they are not going to support AMPS after that date for my AMPS only
phone I have. ( shrug )
Can't say I didn't see this day coming really.

Anyway, "AMPS" where I can, "INMARSAT" where I must to fill the gap I guess.

2 phones. I pay for all minutes. For my minimal use it works. I don't see
why I should have to pay 2 or 3 times as much to switch to newer digital
phones. I'll wait them out. If they don't offer me similarly priced upgrade
to keep me as a customer, when they shut down the analog service they'll
just loose me. A phone call is a phone call, I don't care what technology
they use to deliver it. It benifits them to get me on digital phones. I
won't pay more for it, at least not to them. I'll probably get a TracPhone.

John,
My sister had what they called an "analog-only" plan. Instead of discussing
the plan on the phone, I called and just switched the ESN to a digital
(w/analog) phone. There was no discussion about changing the plan
($6.95/mo. + .32/min). Today, you should be able to just switch the ESN
online.

If you can find your own phone with a clean ESN (eBay?) you can probably
make the switch just as easily. The idea is just to switch the ESN, nothing
else. Remember, any phone activated today must be E911-compatible, but
there's a lot of them available. The best old phone that qualifies is the
Motorola v60s.

v60 has GPS? Mine don't.

None of the v60 models qualify except the v60s, the speakerphone-only
version of the v60p, which was the PTT-version of the v60, both of which
didn't sell well in an age of cameras, polyphonics tones and colorful UI's.

Do you have a v60"s"?

I have a "c", an i(c), and an i(t), none of which have GPS.
