Author Any way to turn off Verizon spam text messages?
Jules Winfield

Verizon periodically spams me with text messages advertising their products
and services. Is there a way to block this without turning off the text
message service in its entirety?

What "period" exactly? Per day? Week? Month? Or do you mean "occasionally"?
In any event, these messages should be free. Can you elaborate on the issue?

Call the customer service number on your invoice or dial 611 from your cell
and ask the customer service person to remove your name from their in-house
telephone, text, email list. They will do so even though they may try and
tell you that as a customer they can bother you. I told them if they send
another in any fashion I would be an "Ex-Customer" Verizon contacts stopped.

Careful, they may try to find any bullsnot excuse to avoid doing so. A
couple of months ago I called them to get them to stop telemarketing my
home phone with prerecorded messages (illegal in any event IIRC). Because
my wife's name is the one on the account, and even though I have all
necessary passwords and they have instructions to let me do anything and
everything I want to do to the account, they refused to put me on their
DNC list. So I called their number back and chose the voicemail-jail
selection that says I want to cancel my account, and I asked the nice
lady there when my contract was complete. She found a way to get us
on the DNC list right away.

I called and politely asked and never received any marketing calls or
messages after that. I also did the same with other organizations and
got the same result.

Why would Verizon Wireless be calling your wifes landline?

Because

Actually the first time I called some girl transferred me to a "porn number"
line. I called back and complained about what happened and the second lady
said her initials were listed on the contact page of my account, and she
would notify her supervisor. I was removed from the calling, texting etc. I
was told that the first girl was transferring me to the toll free number for
such requests and did not mean to place my call to a sex line. It could have
been a mistake.

I have found that if a person tells them that if the calls and text messages
continue to find another customer that spends $125 a month. I think it would
be stupid to continue the acts for such a loss of money. BYMMV

Hmm... so you're on a cheap plan heh? I wish my bill was only $125/mo.

Exactly my point. And they'd leave pre-recorded messages on the answering
machine. It was advertising, pure and simple and blatant.

I'm sure they believe I woke up one day, started to set my feet on the floor,
had an accident, and exclaimed, "My God, I've accidentally fallen into
the Do Not Call List!"

Thanks for the tips, everyone.

I took a closer look at the recent spam that I received from Verizon. They
were promoting some kind of GPS system. At the end of the message, it said
to reply with 'X' if I no longer wished to receive their marketing messages
[I didn't notice this at the time I made my original post]. So I responded
with an 'X'. About fifteen seconds later I received another text message
from Verizon asking me to respond with 'Q' if I really do not want to
receive spam from them. I responded with 'Q' and haven't heard a peep from
them since.

You're a lot more tolerant than I am. It won't take me five minutes from
the time of their first spam on my phone to the time I'm on the phone
telling them to shut off all messaging.

And if you were paying per msg that would have cost you .60 times that
per all the pay per txt msg holders and you now know why they send them
out.

Not when you send. I got charged for 2 then called them to dispute those
charges. They removed the fee. The two I sent were to have them quit
that crap sending.

No more worry. I'm free of them once and for all.

Gotcha. If you turned off voice your bill would be even cheaper.

That's no fun.....(c;

No, no, you must see how much TIME you can occupy at the LOCAL MAIN OFFICE,
asking even the most stupid and mundane incessant questions, worrying them
to death over this message or that message.

Now THAT is a lot of fun!....hee hee.

As per my other message, you must make a special effort to make sure this
behaviour is MOST unprofitable, too. Each message sent and billed needs
to be PERSONALLY addressed by a VZW agent with your PERSONAL visit to the
main local office requesting incessant clarification and the PERSONAL
intervention of the office's manager in your behalf.

The bastards soon tire of spending 3 hours a week with you, responding to
these demands for $.60 refunds and concessions. The more persistent you
are, the longer you take to do anything, the better....(c;

Imagine if all 487,293 spammed customers this afternoon responded
similarly, rather than eating it or dialing 611 to wait for hours to
speak with a simpleton reading a script.

Be sure you LOOK very important when you visit the main office. No jean,
t-shirts, halter tops, sneakers....no no, that won't do, either. One
must ALWAYS be way overdressed, as if you're on your way to meet Rupert
Murdock for lunch at his club to discuss the multibillion dollar
advertising product you're about to purchase from Fox Broadcasting. The
more important you look, the more access you get. XXXX anyone in
sneakers, the lowlife animals. VZW KNOWS businessmen....(c;

But some of us may have better things to do instead of wasting 3 hours
of our time and of a CS person and simply reply to the first message
that you want to be removed from their list or simply ask when you open
the account.

There little increase in price. (The term they used) But I pointed out
little as in _50%_ ? That caused them to lose me. Did not have to pay
the ETF
