recommended phone?
|

| Hi, all.
My current phone appears to be developing a few problems
(it is a Kyocera 6035, if I recall the model number). Old.
I'm looking for a phone meeting the following requirements:
Must haves:
1) complete address book, with address, multiple phone
numbers, and comments/notes (for directions, etc) for
each entry
2) calendar/scheduler with an alarm
3) lists (for shopping, etc.)
4) notes
5) games (including the capability to purchase games and
download them to the unit)
6) decent reception
Nice to have:
1) Graffiti (I prefer that to the small keyboards I see)
2) some kind of swappable memory card
3) ability to play MP3 that are on a memory card
(so I can copy the MP3 from my computer to the card
and then play it using the phone)
4) ability to upload from the palm back-up system I use
to back-up my Kyocera
5) built-in camera and the ability to upload pictures to
my computer without needing to pay an additional fee
6) a GPS program that I can purchase and install on the
phone without needing to pay a "usage" charge, monthly
fee, etc.
7) analog reception
Note that I will have Verizon disable internet access
as it is something I don't use.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Art

| I do not believe that there is any phone made that will satisfy every one of
your requests. Keep the Kyocera or modify your requests.
I will say however, the LG VX 8300 comes might close. E-mail address fields
(2) can be used for notes and addresses and directions, as I do. Although
brief. There is also a notepad feature for just plain notes (not tied to a
number). GPS can be obtained for free, illegally. But you have to pay VZW
to make it legal, No analog mode. Bitpim (free) can be used to back it up.

| From what I've seen so far, the phones with PDAs will all handle the
required stuff. None of the ones I've seen, though, support graffiti.
As for the rest, I'm not sure. That's why I'm asking :^)

The current XV6700 and the upcoming XV6800 as well as all the Treos should
handle all of that and more (not grafitti, but Calligrapher does a damn fine
job). The palm based treo might even be able to use the Kyocera stuff.
Only thing your going to be able to find that does all of that is a PDA (or
smartphone). All you have to do with it is turn off the internet access,
which is easy to do several ways. Verizon won't do it for you because they
like it when you accidentally give them money. I currently own the XV6700
Once you have this phone you never have to deal with Verizon as far as
ringtones, programs, or games are concerned. Just go online and find
whatever you need, and install it through your computer. Keep in mind
thought hat out of the box these phones only sync with Outlook (which is
usually included with the phone), if you use Outlook Express or THunderbird,
you'll need to migrate or else find some program that will do what you need.
There are more than just the XV6700, but this is a good place to start.
Only thing I can't guarantee is the Kyocera backup and the analog reception

Thanks.
I dropped by Verizon. The bad part: the lady I talked to didn't know anything
about PDA phones, and recommended the phone because it had a large
key pad. (She didn't think it could do most of what I wanted).
The good part: she gave me the manual for the XV6700, so I can see that it
can do most of what I want, albeit in a different way.
She also recommended that I attend a class they have once a month to show
people how to use their phones. Apparently the store sponsoring the
class has a lot of employees who are very familiar with the PDA phones.
Any idea what the difference will be between the 6700 and the 6800?
The only GPS software I could find required that a GPS unit be attached
to the phone. Is there some software that can make use of the phone's
knowledge of where it is so I don't need the additional unit?

VZW's GPS service does that.
