After seeing a commercial on t.v for verizon broadband wireless for
$59.99/mth, I went in and signed up for the service without looking
into it. They have bars on the connect screen much like cingular
wireless phone. After signing on for the first time, I wasn't able to
connect for 10-15 minutes. After moving the laptop around the room,
(this is like a cell phone, dead spots and all) I finally found a
signal and was finally able to connect for minutes at a time.
However, I found it very frustrating as it would also hose my
computer. After hours on the cell with technical support(no pun
intended), I decided cancel the service. After the fact, I am left
with a computer with 60-80% memory usage even after de-installing the
software and running a defrag. I have edited regedit and I have also
stopped some processes from running to no avail. Has anyone else run
into problems with Verizon Broadband install affecting the speed of
the computer?

We had to do a full restore of a friend's notebook running XP Pro. Verizon
doesn't want you using it for a bridge to your wifi or Ethernet router.
That's what that shitty software was they made you install where you have
to switch back and forth from the cell to wireless. We lost Ethernet
access all together on his laptop, although the Verizon apologists on this
newsgroup swear that's a lie. He had Ethernet connectivity before
installing Verizon Crapware....He didn't after installing it, so he
couldn't plug his laptop into the office network to download secret
documents any more. After the full restore, Ethernet worked again.

Of course, his Verizon aircard didn't.

I'm surprised at your problems. I've had this service for about nine months
and have found it to be excellent. I've gotten good connections in the most
improbable of places and many where my Verizon cellphone had little or zero
connection. The one time I did have to deal with tech support, they were
extremely professional and knowledgable and, when there was some doubt as to
the hardware (the card itself), they overnighted me a new card free of
charge. Many of my business associates have the Sprint card and they don't
get anywhere near the connectivity that I do. I have nothing but good things
to say about the card.

Larry, I never said it was a "lie"...
It certainly WAS operator error - or installer error.

Thousands of folks use Aircards AND Ethernet just fine.

No, but I use a Mac and it supports the interface I use without installing
Verizon Access Manager.

I have a rule of thumb for this stuff, though. If you have a choice
between a PCCard interface and a USB interface (or an Expresscard
interface, since at these speeds it will also be USB), pick the
USB. The PCcard requires a major device driver to be added to your
operating system kernel, which is scary, but USB devices are much
more generic and don't usually require as much in the way of hard
programming to support, which lessens the chance that the software
you are installing will do bad things.

I use the Verizon USB dongle now. Not only does it work just fine,
but it even helps with your other problem; if the device doesn't
get signal where I want to put the laptop I add a 10' extension cable
(or even two of them) and put the device somewhere where the signal
is better without moving the laptop.

Of course, if you were already using the USB interface then never
mind.
