Author Text messaging in Canada from a US Verizon phone

I am traveling to Canada (Vancouver) in the next two weeks.
I called Verizon today and asked about the cost per text message sent
in Canada from my U.S. Verizon cell phone to another U.S Verizon cell
phone.. They actually couldn't give me a direct answer. They could
only say that its a good chance that there is no extra charge for text
messages (only a 1-hit from my quota of 250 per month for $5). They
said there is a slight chance that I would get charged 25 cents per
message, depending on the roaming conditions on the Canadian network.
Can anyone confirm the cost of text messages, someone who has recently
been in Canada with their US Verizon phone?
Thanks

Well this might give you something to ponder. I was in Montreal PQ and text
messages were not able to be sent.
Nor was Mobile Web available even though Verizon Wireless stated it should
work. I think at the time they partnered with Bell Mobility or TELUS but
neither company could get it to function properly. And they had me change
settings in the phone etc. and I spent hours on the hotel phones on and off
trying to get it fixed.

Funny part was my incoming text messages hit me quickly as soon as I crossed
into the State of New York...
Strange indeed.

When I was in Canada (around Toronto area) I could send and receive text
messages and they were at no additional cost - just came from my monthly
allowance. Verizon's website says the same thing that text messages in
Canada are treated as domestic messages.
