Author Internet on a cellphone?

So am I correct in concluding that cellphones are not (yet?) an adequete
platform for web surfing?

What I would love is to have access to the internet anytime I need it,
using my phone. For example, I want to be able to go to
RottenTomatoes.com from the video store to check the rating on the videos
I am considering.

I tried it ast night from a Verizon store, with the LG ENV, and it was
SLOW, the web page was nearly undecipherable, and finally, it crashed,
with an error message.

Is this typical? Are cellphones not yet adequete for general web
browsing?

THEY SUCK!
Simply that. I have a Samsung sch-i730 with windoze mobile 5 on it. When I
first got it the EVDO speed was FAST....damn fast.
over the past 2 years Verizon has oversold the shit out of it, to the point
its "Jerky". You can tell it's not a continuous feed, but packets of data.
The Browser is a complete joke! As close to worthless as it gets, it wont
display 90% of the websites correctly or at all.
If you want to cruise the Internet while mobile use a EVDO datacard or USB
version on a laptop. That works well.
Consider Sprint as they really do have their "Rev. A." in place and working.
Verizon is still PROMISING to get theirs rolled out.
I guess "Los Angeles" is not a big enough town/area to consider bringing
Rev. A. in a timely manner....

As a mobile phone...Verizon cant be beat in seamless coverage. I continue to
use them, in fact just ordered a new phone from them.
Seriously considering snapping my KPC-650 Datacard in half and moving to
Sprint for data service on the laptop. Sprint doesn't threaten you for using
too much data like Verizon does.

More than adequate with a data plan (broadband plan).

Do they have a web site option for mobile access? If not the problem is
theirs not the phone.

Have you tried mobile web? Been using it for about a year, and works great
on my e815 (about $5 a month)

Depends on your phone, your needs, and your expectations, I guess. I
"surf" on my PDA phone quite often. While not 320x240 is not an optimal
screensize for browsing, it's an adequate compromise between smaller-
screen phones and lugging around a laptop, at least for me.

You do quickly learn to favor sites optimized for mobile use- m.411.com,
wap.ebay.com, hollywood.com/avantgo, mobile.msn.com, google.com/xhtml, etc.

However, browsing "real" sites is usually possible, if sometimes akward.

You happened to pick a particularly bad site for mobile viewing! Large
pages with lots of individual components are very slow to load in phone
browsers and hard to navigate on small screens.

PDA phones seem to fare better than other phones when loading large web
pages- some large pages can
crash a phone browser if the page is larger
than the browser's memory.

I just loaded RottenTomatoes on my T-Mobile MDA (essentially the
equivalent of Verizon's XV-6700 PPC phone.) It loaded dog-slow, both
over cellular and also when I loaded it over Wi-Fi, (so it's a browser
rendering issue, not a data speed issue.) However, I was able to read
all of the information presented, and jump between reviews of various
movies.

Mobile browsing certainly doesn't replicate the desktop experience
anymore than mobile music listening replicates a concert or a pocket TV
replicates a movie theater. Concessions are made to screen size, power
and speed of the device. When they can fit a 3GHz laptop with a 1024x768
screen into a device about the size of a bar of Irish Spring, you can
have true mobile internet. Until then, you either put up with reasonable
limitations or do without, I guess.

You've MUCH better eyesight than I have, I was given a free mobile web
trial with my phone, looked at one email and cancelled. The e815
screen is WAAAAAAAY to small to read text.

I think the Subject and type of answers all depend on individual needs.
For basic/limited info and possibly relatively slow speeds, then your
plain ol' flip phone or basic bar phone would suffice. Screen size and
keyboard entry can also big factors. Anything more would probably
require a "smartphone"/pda or a high-speed card (PCMCIA) or usb? in a
laptop.

I take a little bit of an issue with that- the WWW is supposed to be
platform independent- you're supposed to be able cto visit a web page
with any browser (IE, Opera, Firefox, etc.) on any platform (PC, Mac,
Linux, etc.) While I appreciate those websites that create mobile
versions, I certainly don't expect or demand it. It's the job of my
phone's browser to render a "real" web page the best it can, not just
shove WAP pages at me. I use many non-mobile websites regulrly, and my
choice of device (a PPC phone) is partially based on it's ability to
browse the "real" internet.

I agree, mobileweb is great, but I like it even better for $1.50 per month.
I use hopke.net for my provider rather than the $5 per month from Vzw.

If you want to get really good webpages on your cell phone, then download
OperaMini. www.operamini.com. I use it on my Motorola Razr to access my bank
account. (it even supports encryption). It will display most all webpages. I
also use it to read Microsoft Webmail from my work.

As I mentioned, I use a PPC phone. It's able to run Opera for Mobile,
which is more capable than it's java-based "mini" counterpart.
