Certain topics about M. Steiner come up again and again on Usenet.
Each time they recur, much bandwidth and reader time is wasted.
This article attempts to answer all standard M. Steiner topics.
Hopefully traffic can be reduced significantly.

The questions answered here are divided into the following
categories:

1. M. Steiner's Introduction
2. M. Steiner's Sexuality
3. M. Steiner's Phallus
4. M. Steiner's Appearance
5. M. Steiner's Family
6. M. Steiner's Terminology
7. M. Steiner's Trivia

Section 1. M. Steiner's Introduction
------------------------------------

1.1: What is the deal with M. Steiner??
A: The fact of the matter is that I am contemplating sexual
reassignment surgery, and am planning to begin hormone
replacement therapy. [by steiner@best.com]

1.2: Is this all for real?
A: Yup, it is real. [by steiner@best.com]

Section 2. M. Steiner's Sexuality
---------------------------------

2.1: Is M. Steiner a transvestite?
A: I am not a transvestite; I am a transsexual. There is a
world of difference between the two. A thumbnail difference
is that a transvestite is a man (usually heterosexual) who
likes to wear women's clothing (for any of a number of
reasons), whereas a transsexual is a `woman in a man's
body'). [by steiner@best.com]

You are not a woman in a man's body. Take your pants off
and, size differences aside, you have the same things I
have. Your maleness is in every nucleic cell of your body.
[by Mg655321@cris.com]

2.2: Is M. Steiner a fag? Is M. Steiner a cross dresser?
A: I'm not a fag, and I don't cross dress. [by steiner@best.com]

We still don't know that Michelle is much of a dresser,
but she certainly is cross. [by pimann@pobox.com]

2.3: Has M. Steiner ever been with a man?
A: I have never had sexual relations with any man or men.
[by steiner@best.com]

2.4: Is this sex change issue a phase?
A: Nope; it's not a phase. The surgery is quite irreversable--
not
that I've had it yet. [by steiner@best.com]

2.5: Why does M. Steiner think being male is a birth defect?
A: Being male, per se, is not a birth defect, but when one is
female and one's body is male, that is a birth defect. My
psyche is female; I want to align my body to match my
psyche. [by steiner@best.com]

2.6: How far along is M. Steiner?
A: I'm in the early stages of electrolysis. I started it in
January at one hour a week. (I really need to get two to
four hours a week, but right now, I can't afford more than
one.) I started hormones (at a very low level) on April
24th, and had the dose doubled two days ago.
[by steiner@best.com]

2.7: What's next for M. Steiner?
A: No earlier than three months after starting hormones, I'll
begin Real Life Test (RLT); it might be later than that,
however, depending on the progress of my electrolysis and
how well I'll have been able to feminize my voice--I may
have to consult with a voice coach, but I hope to avoid
that expense. My social and work situation will also affect
the date that I begin RLT. RLT entails my living as a woman
full time--at work, at all social functions, etc. The only
exception would be those dictated by physical constraints
(i.e., having sex; it's not possible to have sex as a woman
without a woman's plumbing).

After a minimum of two years of therapy, and one year in
RLT, I'll be eligible for SRS (Sex Reconstruction Surgery)
providing my therapist and one other therapist recommend
it. [by steiner@best.com]

Section 3. M. Steiner's Phallus
-------------------------------

3.1: Does M. Steiner have a phallus?
A: Currently, my testes and `member' are intact.
[by steiner@best.com]

3.2: Did M. Steiner lose his phallus?
A: I did not lose my penis; I know exactly where it is.
[by steiner@best.com]

3.3: Is M. Steiner going to have his phallus chopped off?
A: Nope; I'm not going to have mine lopped off. It's going to
be scooped out, then inverted and stuck inside to form a
vagina. The technique is called `penile inversion,' and
is a vast improvement over the former method of lopping it
off and using a section of colon to form the vagina.
[by steiner@best.com]

3.4: Why is M. Steiner going to have his genitals mutilated?
A: SRS is not mutilation; it is a surgical correction of a
birth defect. [by steiner@best.com]

I don't believe that Steiner's current body is the result
of a birth defect at all. [by karl@tdb.uu.se]

3.5: Why is it necessary to have such surgery?
A: I've given thought to being a `no-op' TS (one who has the
hormone treatments, and lives full time as a woman, but
who never has `the surgery'), but I doubt that I would be
comfortable in that situation, although other TS women are
comfortable in it. [by steiner@best.com]

3.6: When will M. Steiner have this surgery?
A: The earliest I could have surgery is November 1996--and
then only if I can start RLT by November of 1995; in order
to do that, I'd have to start hormones no later than August
1995. Even so, I'll probably have to delay surgery past
November, 1996 because I probably won't have the funds to
pay for it by then. [by steiner@best.com]

3.7: How much does the surgery cost?
A: A basic genital surgery costs between $6,000 (by doctor in
Brussells) to about $12,000 (by a doctor in Wisconsin). If
an Adam's Apple reduction or breast enlargement is done
(although they can always be done earlier or later than
SRS), that would cost more.

3.8: Will M. Steiner be able to function as a woman after surgery?
A: My new parts would be as fully functional as can be under the
circumstances. Of course, I would not be able to become
pregnant (for one thing, the surgery can't provide a uterus
or ovaries; for another thing, at my age--I'd be in my mid
50s at the time of surgery--pregancy is not normally
possible); however, I'd be capable of female orgasm.

Section 4. M. Steiner's Appearance
----------------------------------

4.1: What does M. Steiner look like now?
A: I did see him at the AG though. He looked like hell. He
must be broke; he couldn't afford his own clothes so he had
to borrow his wife's, and the stress must have made his
moustache fall out. [by mg655321@buffalo1.localnet.com]

Let's see, you are in your early fifties, are five foot
six, are slightly over weight with a modist pot belly, have
brown hair that is receading. [by jpn@netcom.com]

4.2: What will M. Steiner look like after surgery?
A: After surgery, I'll be to all outward appearances, even
while naked, a woman. [by steiner@best.com]

[U]nless the GIF's in your FTP directory are seriously out
of date, odds are you'll spend the rest of your life looking
like a transvestite. [by karl@tdb.uu.se]

I have this image of some poor guy tottering around with
a gap between his legs, and pancake makeup desperately
trying to hide a 5 o'clock shadow. [by steve@adam.com.au]

4.3: Where can I find a picture of M. Steiner?
A: You can ftp to ftp.best.com and look in /pub/steiner to see
a definite `before' picture and one or two of me now, with
changes only in hair, eyeglasses, clothing, and some weight
loss. [by steiner@best.com]

4.4: Will M. Steiner have breasts?
A: About three months after I begin the hormone therapy, I'll
probably develop breasts (based on experience of others,
they should be an A cup, with a small chance of development
sufficient for a B cup). [by steiner@best.com]

4.5: What other effects will the hormone therapy have?
A: My body fat will be redistributed somewhat, with my abdomen
getting smaller and my butt and hips getting larger. My
skin will become softer and a bit thinner.
[by steiner@best.com]

Section 5. M. Steiner's Family
------------------------------

5.1: Is M. Steiner married?
A: Yes. My wife is Sharon A. Steiner. [by steiner@best.com]

5.2: Does M. Steiner have a daughter?
A: Yes. [by steiner@best.com]

You have a daughter that was in the ARMY and had a child
out of wed lock. [by jpn@netcom.com]

Section 6. M. Steiner's Terminology
-----------------------------------

6.1: Is it okay to call M. Steiner `Mike'?
A: Please address me, and refer to me, as Michelle and not as
Mike. [by steiner@best.com]

Failing that, if, like me, you don't wish to insult Steiner,
but for some reason feel an inexplicable discomfort referring
to Steiner as Michelle or she, Steiner also has another
name: Steiner. Steiner has (thus far, at least) never
complained about being referred to by last name.
[by rharbeck@freenet.calgary.ab.ca]

6.2: What pronoun should I use to refer to M. Steiner? Is `it'
okay?
A: I am not an `it.' The name is Michelle, and the pronouns
are she and her. [by steiner@best.com]

6.3: What will M. Steiner's driver's license say?
A: By the end of this year, my driver's license will have my
name listed as Michelle A. Steiner, and will indicate that
my gender is female. [by steiner@best.com]

6.4: What about M. Steiner's birth certificate?
A: Once I start RLT, I'll get a letter from my therapist; I
take this letter to the nearest DMV, and apply for a new
drivers license as Michelle and with gender as Female. Once
I get that done, I can get almost all my paperwork (credit
cards, employment records, etc.) changed both regarding
name and gender.

I believe that for life-insurance purposes, passport, and
possibly social security and my army retired records, I
have to have a court order changing my name and gender--but
I won't be able to do that until after surgery. Also, once
I get the court order, I can get a new birth certificate
as Michelle Anne Steiner, female baby. The original birth
certificate will then be sealed, and would not be able to
be unsealed without a court order. [by steiner@best.com]

Section 7. M. Steiner's Trivia
------------------------------

7.1: Did M. Steiner retire from the army?
A: Yes. I retired on June 1, 1983 as a chief warrant officer.
[by steiner@best.com]

You was a member of the UNITED STATES ARMY, had a MOS of
military intelligence (SICOXYMORON). [by jpn@netcom.com]

7.2: Can M. Steiner still be considered a Jew?
A: Mike/Michele Steiner can no longer be counted as a Jew,
nor permitted to participate in synangog activity. The
authority for this is Deuteronomy Ch 23 v. 2.
[by d0fxsgb@bell-atl.com]

Reform and Recontstructionist Judaism don't follow that
dictate, and Conservative Judaism might not (but I don't
know). [by steiner@best.com]

7.3: What is a Steiner?
A: Steiner is a machine that answers EVERY thread on this
group even if it is only to add one stupid sentence.
[by BajoriAP@Perkin-Elmer.com]

7.4: Does M. Steiner leave the seat up or down?
A: Down. [by steiner@best.com]

Yes. Americans have cornered the market on that. What a ridiculous
statement from an obvious dipshit. Your music is as crappy as your brain
is tiny.

"Scott", you may get off with such a waste of time, but we REALLY DON'T CARE
ABOUT MS' DETAILS. You may feel that you embarrassed MS, but YOU WASTE OUR
BANDWIDTH AND TIME.

If it's not about Macintosh, SHUT THE XXXX UP.

My advice: DUMP WHAT YOU CALL YOUR LIFE AND GET A REAL ONE.

Really.
